The Safety Dance \u2013 Part 3<\/a><\/p>\n

And once again Jim felt like the mark in a three-card Monty game.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t put his hand on his wallet but he almost did.\u00a0 Instead, he shook the hand that Connors proffered and allowed himself to be escorted to a chair at a small table to the side of the huge desk.\u00a0 The former chauffer took another chair next to him and put on a sheepish grin, \u201cI guess you\u2019re starting to wonder whether the lunatics are running the asylum but I assure you there is a reason for all this.<\/p>\n

Jim vented a particularly heavy sigh and said, \u201cMr. Connors, I think I\u2019m too confused at this point to know what to say.\u00a0 I think I\u2019d like to head home at this point.\u00a0 I\u2019m just a regular guy who takes the commuter train back and forth to work and doesn\u2019t expect to have the CEO spying on him on the drive from the airport.\u00a0 Maybe we should call it a day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t blame you for feeling that way.\u00a0 But before I send you home, let me try to explain and if what you hear interests you, we can continue.\u201d\u00a0 Jim nodded his head.\u00a0 Connors continued, \u201cYou know all this is your own fault.\u00a0 When you called your friend Dave, it triggered all this.\u00a0 And it wasn\u2019t the fact that he wanted you to interview for the Missouri job that caught our attention.\u00a0 It was how Dave described you.\u00a0 As it turns out Dave isn\u2019t your biggest fan.\u00a0 He kind of thinks you\u2019re an idealist about politics and how the world works, although idealist isn\u2019t the word he uses.\u00a0 As you probably know Dave is not at all idealistic or even particularly ethical in how he approaches work or even life in general.\u00a0 Dave works at that office because he works quite well with other people like himself.\u00a0 And unfortunately, that is valuable more often than we wish it were.\u00a0 So, he\u2019s a kind of negative standard.\u00a0 If he says someone is a loser, we assume he means that person is honest.\u00a0 So that\u2019s why we interviewed you in New York and that\u2019s why you\u2019re here.\u00a0 Now this job is a technical one and so I needed you to talk to my team.\u00a0 They think you\u2019d be a good addition to the group.\u00a0 Your background and your skills are a good match.\u00a0 So that\u2019s great.<\/p>\n

But our organization is extremely unusual in a number of ways.\u00a0 For instance, the compensation package is completely different from any other company you\u2019ve ever heard of.\u00a0 And the secrecy agreement is much more stringent than anything this side of the Sicilian Mafia.\u00a0 So, as you can imagine we take the candidate selection process to extreme lengths.\u00a0 For instance, we\u2019ve done a background check on you that would make the CIA jealous.\u00a0 We have access to intelligence sources that are pretty much comprehensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this point Jim spoke up, \u201cAre you guys working for the US government or some other country?\u201d\u00a0 Connors shook his head, \u201cJust the opposite.\u00a0 We do most of all this to avoid the interference of the federal government.\u00a0 And if Dave\u2019s negative description of you got you that interview in New York, it was your answer to Milo that got you to Wyoming.\u00a0 Do you remember what he asked you and what you answered?\u00a0 He asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the biggest threat to your family\u2019s long-term well-being?\u201d and you said, \u201cOur own government.\u201d\u00a0 Well, that was the secret password.\u00a0 That\u2019s the golden ticket.\u00a0 This company exists in the form it has because I believe that same thing you said.\u00a0 Our government is the greatest threat to the future of its citizens that exists on this planet.\u00a0 More generally it\u2019s the greatest threat to all of humanity because it is so powerful that there is no longer any brake on its power and its mission is no longer tied in a meaningful way to our welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n

Connors had now managed to direct Jim\u2019s thoughts away from his own predicament and toward the larger reality of the modern world, something that Jim spent a considerable time thinking about before he became unemployed.\u00a0 Jim asked, \u201cWell, what could you hope to accomplish against a coordinated and all-pervasive system of control like the feds?\u201d<\/p>\n

Connors smiled.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised.\u00a0 Or maybe you wouldn\u2019t be.\u00a0 But the way we do it is to build our own society right out in plain sight.\u00a0 We\u2019ve formed a tight-knit community of like-minded individuals and their families and we go about our lives looking for all the world like everybody else but like the iceberg the great majority of our organization is hidden from view and provides the opportunity for us to thrive away from the government\u2019s habits of interference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his earlier alarm at Connor\u2019s tactics, Jim found himself intrigued by this crazy story of a secret organization hiding from the government in plain sight.\u00a0 \u201cBut surely the IRS and several other federal agencies would detect all this additional commercial activity and come crashing down on you.\u00a0 Won\u2019t all the excess consumption by your employees trigger alarm bells in those who spend their lives looking for people avoiding taxes?\u201d<\/p>\n

Connors countered, \u201cIt would if there were excess consumption to detect.\u00a0 But what my set-up entails is internal capture of all or almost all of the commercial and industrial needs of our communities.\u00a0 Did you notice the automobile that we drove here in?\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t come from Detroit or Japan or Korea.\u00a0 We make them ourselves.\u00a0 And we also make the gasoline it runs on, at least when we fill it up in town.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim jumped on this statement, \u201cBut not having any commerce is just as bad as having too much.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure the government monitors the apparent economic activity in an area and would notice if a large population like a whole town or several towns didn\u2019t seem to buy or sell anything.\u201d\u00a0 Connors smiled, \u201cVery true and that is why we very carefully balance our apparent commerce to expectations.\u00a0 In fact, we have all this down to a science.\u00a0 But that\u2019s hardly all we do to maintain this masquerade.\u00a0 I am one of the largest government contractors outside of the defense procurement sector.\u00a0 My enterprises support a very large lobbying effort in DC and I keep all the most important congressional leaders well-greased.\u00a0 In addition, I employ another retinue of former government regulators on staff to make sure that we are well regarded by the deep state.\u00a0 It\u2019s people like these that your friend Dave involves himself with.\u00a0 The levers of power are lined up in the correct order.\u00a0 I leave nothing to chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim considered these details carefully.\u00a0 And then said, \u201cBut to what end?\u00a0 Where can this all go?\u201d\u00a0 Connors replied, \u201cI\u2019m building something that should one day be strong enough to come out in the open and tell our masters, \u201cNo more!\u00a0 We\u2019re free and we\u2019ll stay that way and we\u2019re too strong for you to hold us down.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the end game.\u00a0 But in the meantime, we\u2019re a family.\u00a0 Every family in our organization has the resources and opportunity to thrive and live a great life.\u00a0 Everyone has the creature comforts of modern life and in addition education is addressed comprehensively and the level of expertise in the faculty rivals what you could expect at MIT or Cal Tech.\u00a0 Our humanities curriculum isn\u2019t as developed as the technical side but it\u2019s adequate.\u00a0 And best of all the government is kept at bay.\u00a0 We live our lives without the interference of Washington bureaucrats telling us what we can and can\u2019t do; what we can and can\u2019t think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Connors stopped talking and watched Locke.\u00a0 He was silent for several minutes, looking like he wanted to say something.\u00a0 \u201cWhat if I say no?\u00a0 I know a lot of stuff that you don\u2019t want known.\u00a0 What would happen?\u201d\u00a0 Connors looked at him seriously and said, \u201cDo you mean would we kill you or something?\u00a0 We\u2019re not evil men.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t be here if we didn\u2019t think you were basically a decent man.\u00a0 If you say no, we send you home and that\u2019s the end of it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be very disappointed but we\u2019ll find someone else to take that spot.\u00a0 If someone went out of his way to make trouble for us with the government, I couldn\u2019t say how it would end up.\u00a0 We have built up some protective arrangements into our government connections but they are unpleasant and dangerous.\u00a0 We work with some questionable people in the intelligence agencies and if we told them that you were a security risk, bad things might happen but it wouldn\u2019t be something we would initiate.\u00a0 Are you telling me you are thinking of informing on us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim answered quietly, \u201cNo I\u2019m just trying to understand how you can allow a safety risk such as myself to threaten your whole operation.\u201d\u00a0 Connors said, \u201cWe\u2019re good people and we\u2019re smart.\u00a0 We can tell the difference between the trustworthy and the dishonest.\u00a0 We recognize good people.\u00a0 When we find them, we treat them fairly and depend on them to treat us the same.\u00a0 It works.\u00a0 Are you interested?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim smiled, \u201cYou don\u2019t pay your employees money.\u00a0 So basically, it\u2019s as if I had a sign across my chest that said \u201cWILL ENGINEER FOR FOOD!<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0 Is there a chance I can get an Amazon gift card for Christmas?\u201d\u00a0 Connors scowled and said \u201cWhy is it always the engineers that think they have a sense of humor?\u201d\u00a0 Jim laughed, \u201cBecause we see the cosmic irony of trying to get anything done by the boss\u2019s schedule.\u00a0 Will you be driving me home to the airport?\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to get home and start uprooting my family.\u201d\u00a0 Now it was Connors\u2019 turn to laugh, \u201cI\u2019ve got more important things to do than that.\u00a0 Luckily for you we\u2019ve got an airfield on the property.\u00a0 I just drove you from Bozeman to get a good read on you.\u00a0 Can never be too sure of the new guys you know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
