Hunsecker a New York City newspaper entertainment columnist whose influence allows him to make and break careers of entertainers, politicians and anyone who displeases him.\u00a0 Tony Curtis plays Sidney Falco; a cynical and morally bankrupt press agent who depends on Hunsecker\u2019s largesse to survive in the shark infested waters of New York City\u2019s entertainment industry.<\/p>\n<p>Falco is being punished by Hunsecker because he hasn\u2019t been able to break up a love affair between Hunsecker\u2019s sister Susan and a jazz musician named Steve Dallas (played by Martin Milner).\u00a0 And most of the plot revolves around Falco and Hunsecker\u2019s efforts to smear Dallas\u2019s name and\/or have him arrested for marijuana possession.<\/p>\n<p>Hunsecker\u2019s influence with a brutal NYPD police detective named Kello eventually leads to Dallas being arrested on a trumped up marijuana possession charge, assaulted by Kello and hospitalized.\u00a0 Near the end of the movie Susan rebels at the plot that her brother and Falco concocted against Dallas and she tells Falco that Hunsecker will blame him after she commits suicide by jumping out the window of her Manhattan penthouse.\u00a0 Falco stops her from jumping but when Hunsecker walks in on them and sees his sister in her underwear with Falco he believes her when she says that Falco had attempted to sexually assault her.\u00a0 He slaps Falco several times.\u00a0 At that point Falco reveals to Susan that it was Hunsecker who hired Kello to beat Dallas.\u00a0 As revenge Hunsecker calls Kello and reports that Falco framed Dallas and he should be arrested for this offense.\u00a0 But Susan finally rebels against her brother and walks out of their apartment to join Dallas.\u00a0 When Falco tries to flee the apartment, he is met on the street by Kello who beats him mercilessly and drags him away to jail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommendation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is one hell of a strange movie.\u00a0 Lancaster and Curtis spend the whole movie bantering back and forth at each other with a rapid-fire dialog composed of some kind of 1950\u2019s beatnik\/hipster patois, or at least what someone in Hollywood thought beatnik\/hipster patois should sound like.\u00a0 It\u2019s truly bizarre.\u00a0 Such lines as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201dI&#8217;d hate to take a bite outta you. You&#8217;re a cookie full of arsenic.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re blind, Mr. Magoo. This is the crossroads for me. I won\u2019t get Kello. Not for a lifetime pass to the Polo Grounds. Not if you serve me Cleopatra on a plate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re dead son. Get buried.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSidney, this syrup you&#8217;re giving out with&#8230; you pour over waffles, not J. J. Hunsecker.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And as you could imagine this is an incredibly downbeat movie.\u00a0 Almost none of the characters are admirable or even likable.\u00a0 The ending is something of a redemption for Susan but hardly worth the ordeal of swimming through J.J\u2019s and Falco\u2019s cesspool.\u00a0 I can\u2019t recommend this movie to most people.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll confess that about once a year I want to watch this movie, sort of as a joke.\u00a0 Maybe I just kind of like Falco saying, \u201cYou\u2019re blind, Mr. Magoo.\u201d\u00a0 And there are many people who admire this movie for its gritty portrayal of something or other.\u00a0 I\u2019ll leave it to the individual to decide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Spoiler Alert \u2013 Skip down to recommendation section at the bottom to avoid spoilers and read recommendation) \u201cSweet Smell of Success\u201d was produced by Burt<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[239,237],"tags":[2974,4666,43,38,1355,4665],"class_list":["post-30327","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","category-reviews","tag-burt-lancaster","tag-martin-milner","tag-movie-review","tag-review","tag-reviews","tag-tony-curtis"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
