referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the Hollywood film, \u201cThe Bad and the Beautiful\u201d there is a discussion between an actor named Gaucho and a bit-part actress on the make named Lila.\u00a0 Gaucho tells her that his producer friend Jonathan (Kirk Douglas\u2019s character) is a great man.\u00a0 But world-weary Lila laughs and replies \u201cThere are no great men, buster, there\u2019s only men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, are there any great men?\u00a0 Were there ever any?\u00a0 Is a Caesar or a Napoleon great?\u00a0 Or were they just great generals.\u00a0 Was Einstein great or was he merely a genius?\u00a0 Was Socrates a great man or merely annoying?\u00a0 How about St Paul?<\/p>\n<p>It seems to me that the definition of a great man is one who is both intelligent and moral.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s not enough to be brilliant if the use of your intelligence is to do evil.\u00a0 And it\u2019s not enough to be a saint if you cannot somehow use this moral sense to benefit humanity as a whole or at least a significant chunk of it.<\/p>\n<p>Framed the way I have here it\u2019s not that easy to pick out these exceptional beings.\u00a0 I guess religious leaders like Jesus, Buddha, Moses stand out.\u00a0 They\u2019ve had an outsized impact on the world.\u00a0 They understood the problem of living in the world of men.\u00a0 It\u2019s so very hard to know what is the right thing to do in the multitude of decisions we make as we negotiate the confusing and frightening human world.\u00a0 How often we choose the easier thing instead of the \u201cright\u201d choice.\u00a0 We compromise our morals and standards to avoid pain or discomfort or even embarrassment.\u00a0 How much more will a leader compromise because the stakes are just so incredibly high.<\/p>\n<p>I guess the only leader that comes to mind is Marcus Aurelius; the philosopher king.\u00a0 Not that he was perfect or that none of his philosophy was misguided.\u00a0 But without a doubt he was intelligent and he used his powerful office to provide the best government he could to the millions who lived within the Roman empire in the second century AD.\u00a0 Maybe this is an example of a great man.<\/p>\n<p>So which Americans were great?\u00a0 Washington, Jefferson?\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 In the last one hundred and fifty years I don\u2019t think there\u2019s been much greatness.\u00a0 FDR had a large impact on the country but I don\u2019t think he was wise.\u00a0 And so many of our recent presidents are neither moral nor wise.\u00a0 Some were truly awful, like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and especially Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>So where does that leave Donald Trump?\u00a0 Well, morality is not his forte.\u00a0 His private life is a mess.\u00a0 You need look no further than the \u201cStormy Daniels\u201d episode to see that he does not restrain his baser nature at all.\u00a0 Then again do any of the wealthy ever do better?\u00a0 As for intelligence, he\u2019s not a stupid man.\u00a0 He is an ambitious businessman who knows how to market himself.\u00a0 Is he wise?\u00a0 Well, he\u2019s no philosopher king.\u00a0 But I think he does feel affection for his countrymen.\u00a0 I think he does want to make America a better place and make life better for Americans.<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s just say that if he succeeds, Donald Trump will perform a truly great service for the United States of America.\u00a0 He will save it from the forces that are currently destroying it.\u00a0 He can vanquish the managerial bureaucracy that rules over us and is leeching away our strength and vitality.\u00a0 He will succeed where a century of American presidents has failed to save their country. \u00a0That would be
