{"id":32456,"date":"2025-02-28T15:03:37","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T20:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=32456"},"modified":"2025-02-28T15:03:37","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T20:03:37","slug":"fixing-research-with-a-chainsaw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/28\/fixing-research-with-a-chainsaw\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing Research With a Chainsaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few days ago I linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/16\/fake-science-exposed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video by Sabine Hossenfelder<\/a> who shared a letter from a colleague warning her not to expose the fact that most academic research papers in particle physics were useless nonsense.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Should we defund academia?\" width=\"783\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/htb_n7ok9AU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now she&#8217;s followed up that video with one with her thoughts on what will happen when an administration that wants to reduce waste in government starts looking closely at what kinds of research are being funded in the hard sciences.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s before we even get to the nonsense that the social sciences call research.<\/p>\n<p>Now Sabine is far from a conservative.\u00a0 She&#8217;s a moderate climate change advocate and several other progressive ideas.\u00a0 But she seems to be a realist when it comes to the nonsense being funded in academic research centers.<\/p>\n<p>She advocates for corporate research for anything that will have commercial applications and only sees government funding for things like defense applications and a very small set of other areas.<\/p>\n<p>I agree with her.\u00a0 Government funding of academic research has become a feeding trough for bad science.\u00a0 It has created bloated university faculties doing useless research that benefits no one but the faculty and even they are dissatisfied because they know they&#8217;re frauds.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t wait until Musk and DOGE gets to the NSF and the health research funding agencies.\u00a0 It should be a mighty bloodbath.\u00a0 And that will change the universities too, for the better.\u00a0 They&#8217;ll be poorer and smaller in the short term but they&#8217;ll be healthier and more useful in the long run.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few days ago I linked to a video by Sabine Hossenfelder who shared a letter from a colleague warning her not to expose the<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,712,6],"tags":[4805,2517,713,3876,16],"class_list":["post-32456","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","category-fake-science","category-trump","tag-doge","tag-elon-musk","tag-fake-science","tag-sabine-hossenfelder","tag-trump"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
