In Elena Gorokhova\u2019s 2010 memoir \u201cA Mountain of Crumbs\u201d she famously writes: “The rules are simple: they lie to us, we know they\u2019re lying, they know we know they\u2019re lying, but they keep lying to us, and we keep pretending to believe them.”<\/p>\n
I guess that\u2019s the only difference between us and the Soviets.\u00a0 A lot of us didn\u2019t know how much they were lying to us.\u00a0 Probably it\u2019s because the living is so much easier here than in Soviet Russia, that for most people we could assume that things were being run pretty well and we didn\u2019t have to mistrust everything that our government said and did.<\/p>\n
So maybe we didn\u2019t get smarter.\u00a0 Instead, life got tougher and so it was easier to see when they were lying and cheating us.\u00a0 After all, when things are great and you have everything you need the fact that a lying skunk like Joe Biden is skimming a little from government contractors doesn\u2019t seem like the end of the world.<\/p>\n
But when the bottom falls out and they\u2019re selling off your country by the metric ton and telling you it\u2019s your own fault.\u00a0 And then when they cause a plague and then gaslight you into locking yourself in your house for a couple of years it kind of becomes obvious what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 They lied about the border, they lied about crime, they lied about inflation, they lied about energy prices, they lied about COVID, they lied about the vaccines, they lied about transgender children, they lied about the elections, they lied about Trump, they lied about Joe Biden\u2019s dementia and finally they lied about Kamala\u2019s polls.<\/p>\n
But in our favor, we didn\u2019t pretend to believe them.\u00a0 At least not those of us with normal intelligence.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re not as bad off as Soviet Russia.\u00a0 The difference is we haven\u2019t let them cow us into saying that 2 + 2 = 5.<\/p>\n
But all of this came up because of that NY Times opinion article that owned up to all the lies about COVID that the government and the experts told.\u00a0 A lot of us didn\u2019t believe the lies because we had a little sense about how ridiculous it was to think that anything less than a biohazard pressure suit and a washdown airlock would keep us safe from an airborne respiratory virus.\u00a0 But I shouldn\u2019t be surprised that a lot of people would think, \u201cThe government wouldn\u2019t lie to us about something that important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Well, guess what?\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 And that\u2019s what\u2019s so powerful about this moment.\u00a0 Eureka!\u00a0 Now what else have they lied to us about?\u00a0 Until now the government has been protected from the worst suspicions because no one wants to feel like a paranoid mental case.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no way the CIA killed Kennedy.\u201d\u00a0 Wanna bet?<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no way we knew Sadaam didn\u2019t have a nuclear program.\u201d Wanna bet?<\/p>\n
