{"id":33136,"date":"2025-05-03T05:00:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T09:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=33136"},"modified":"2025-05-02T23:04:01","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T03:04:01","slug":"vitality-and-right-wing-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/03\/vitality-and-right-wing-literature\/","title":{"rendered":"Vitality and Right-Wing Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was listening to a podcast by NY Times token \u201cconservative\u201d Russ Douthat talking to conservative publisher Jonathan Keeperman.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The New Culture of the Right: Vital, Masculine and Offensive | Interesting Times with Ross Douthat\" width=\"783\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tj1hSTDXmrI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Keeperman is a publisher for a press called <a href=\"https:\/\/passage.press\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passage Publishing<\/a>.\u00a0 He has a lot of avant-garde friends like Curtis Yarvin and possibly some of the Silicon Valley folks like Peter Thiel.\u00a0 He and Douthat talked (a lot) about how the Right is becoming a sort of counter-culture in the way that the Left did back in the 1960s and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s kind of interesting to hear them discuss this shift in the culture in general but one of the more interesting things that Douthat said was that up until now the Right hasn\u2019t produced any real literature on its side of the cultural divide.\u00a0 Then Keeperman made some offbeat suggestions saying things like Cormac McCarthy\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo Country for Old Men\u201d is from the right.\u00a0 I think specifically he said that the Coen Brother\u2019s movie based on it is from the Right.\u00a0 Now never in any imagining have I ever equated the Coen Brothers or their movies with anything right-wing.\u00a0 So, I find this very strange.\u00a0 And honestly, all the people associated with Curtis Yarvin have always struck me as hipsters.\u00a0 And I have always ranked hipsters as the most left-leaning of all the various weirdos to be found in New York City.\u00a0 So, none of this makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n<p>But I guess if someone interested in literature who wasn\u2019t a Leftist wanted to talk to the New York Times about literature, he would talk to Russ Douthat and try to find some middle ground where they could both make believe that Douthat wasn\u2019t a total leftist.<\/p>\n<p>I was interested to read that Keeperman has published illustrated editions of H P Lovecraft and Robert E Howard and that leads me to think that maybe he\u2019s not a leftist.\u00a0 The Left despises both of those old authors and would never publish their works under any circumstance.\u00a0 So, I need to find out a lot more about Keeperman and his press.\u00a0 It could be interesting.<\/p>\n<p>But he said one interesting thing about the current state of right-wing literature.\u00a0 He said that the problem with most of it is that it\u2019s mostly just grievance based.\u00a0 It exists to rail against and blame the leftist society we currently live in and therefore loses the chance to be \u201cvital.\u201d\u00a0 Essentially, it\u2019s existence is only as a protest against the status quo and therefore only has a negative presence.<\/p>\n<p>And that interested me.\u00a0 Because my book is in a real way, exactly that.\u00a0 It is a war being fought against the status quo.\u00a0 And so, I have to look at what I wrote and see if his criticism of this kind of story is a legitimate case against the value of the story I have written.\u00a0 In order to do that I will have to look at what gives \u201cvitality\u201d and entertainment value to a story.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, all things are relative and being objective, especially about something I myself wrote is fraught with peril.\u00a0 Probably the only way to know for sure is to attempt to get it published and see what results.\u00a0 But it has given me pause and I will think long and hard to see if I think there are any aspects of the story that lack \u201cvitality.\u201d\u00a0 Whatever that is.\u00a0 Boy when it rains it pours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was listening to a podcast by NY Times token \u201cconservative\u201d Russ Douthat talking to conservative publisher Jonathan Keeperman.
