The Bible (Psalms 90:10) says, \u201cThe days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, seventy years are a little less than 25,000 days.\u00a0 That seems like a big number.\u00a0 But at the end looking back, it\u2019s the blink of an eye.\u00a0 That time is swallowed up in sleeping and commuting to work and drinking bad coffee and keeping your boss from firing you and fighting with vendors and trying to satisfy clients and paying the bills.\u00a0 Hopefully you spent enough time with your wife and kids so that they had some inkling of who you really are.<\/p>\n

The best days are carrying the babies home from a family party where everyone was glad to see each other and there was something to celebrate; a holiday or an occasion.\u00a0 Or taking the kids to the seashore for a week or two in the heat of July.\u00a0 Or maybe taking your wife out someplace special for a big anniversary.<\/p>\n

And then the kids get married and then the grandchildren come along.\u00a0 So, there\u2019s a progression.\u00a0 The cycle comes around again.\u00a0 Only now you\u2019re on the other side of the wheel.\u00a0 Way out there on the far side.\u00a0 You recognize the program but now you\u2019re seeing it from far away.<\/p>\n

So, the thing to do is try to make yourself useful and try to add a little something to the plot of the story.\u00a0 You\u2019re no longer the lead.\u00a0 You\u2019re not even near the center of the stage.\u00a0 You\u2019re kind of the guy in the wings with a copy of the script ready to whisper the lines to the actors if they forget their lines.\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s still useful and who knows maybe there\u2019s a non-speaking role for you as a spear carrier.\u00a0 That\u2019s when you get to be backup driver for soccer games or band practice.\u00a0 After all it\u2019s honorable service.<\/p>\n

But it is weird how life works.\u00a0 You really can\u2019t delay gratification.\u00a0 You can\u2019t work for forty years to make enough money to make the last years worth having missed what came before.\u00a0 You have to figure out how to squeeze the joy out of the process of living.\u00a0 You have to enjoy being a kid and a young man and your prime and what comes after that.\u00a0 You have to find some friends along the way, go on those coffee walks at break time and go to your kids\u2019 soccer games and their kids\u2019 baseball games and volunteer around town and even do really annoying stuff like getting involved in local politics.<\/p>\n

Like I said, it\u2019s the blink of an eye.\u00a0 Twenty-five or thirty thousand days is a short span when so much is eaten up by routine that is almost unavoidable.\u00a0 I guess if you\u2019re a billionaire it\u2019s a little different but I\u2019ll bet it\u2019s still the same tradeoffs, responsibilities versus joy.<\/p>\n

Of course I haven\u2019t seen the last page.\u00a0 As Shakespeare said,<\/p>\n

\u201cLast scene of all,<\/em><\/p>\n

That ends this strange eventful history,<\/em><\/p>\n

Is second childishness and mere oblivion,<\/em><\/p>\n

Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
