Six down, one to go.\u00a0 A fourteen-hour day just ended.\u00a0 It went better than I expected.\u00a0 It did end in failure and will have to be repeated in June but that\u2019s a story for another day.\u00a0 The main thing is I didn\u2019t crash and burn in the middle and if I get through tomorrow, which will be easier than today, I can relax through my root canal or tooth extraction or whatever other dental horror story occurs on Thursday.<\/p>\n
And I was completely isolated from the outside world today.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know whether aliens landed from the Andromeda galaxy and cured Joe Biden\u2019s cancer and started flights of humans to their world based on a book whose title will eventually be translated to mean \u201cTo Serve Biden\u201d (it\u2019s a cookbook!).\u00a0 I looked at the headlines tonight briefly and I couldn\u2019t find anything of note but maybe I\u2019m just tired.<\/p>\n
While I was gone, I put Camera Girl in charge.\u00a0 But the dogs know she is a pushover and they ran amok terrorizing her and just trampling her attempts to maintain order at the Compound.\u00a0 It\u2019s an old story.\u00a0 She is acknowledged to be the world\u2019s least effective dog owner.\u00a0 She spoiled these dogs and now they neither fear no respect her.\u00a0 I could restore order but what\u2019s the use.\u00a0 She refuses to discipline them in any meaningful way.\u00a0 She just screams at them without any result.\u00a0 But all of this is irrelevant.\u00a0 Tomorrow is a day fraught with great significance.\u00a0 Exactly fifty years ago tomorrow I first laid eyes on Camera Girl when she was just a seventeen-year-old babe at the beach in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
That day was an example of fate.\u00a0 Neither of us was supposed to be at the beach that day.\u00a0 And neither of us had ever met.\u00a0 And just by the sheerest accident we each had a friend that knew each other and who had planned to meet at the beach.\u00a0 So, by third hand luck we met and hit it off.\u00a0 And now fifty years later we\u2019re still keeping company and trying to figure out what the heck we\u2019re going to do to keep this crazy merry-go-round twirling for a little while longer.<\/p>\n
Fifty years is a considerable amount of time.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically my entire adult life.\u00a0 The friend who knew her friend is long dead but still comes to mind from time to time because he may have been the funniest human being I\u2019ve ever met.\u00a0 I guess humor isn\u2019t a good predictor of human success or even survival.\u00a0 It is a very strange world we live in.\u00a0 The unlikeliest chance can have a profound impact and steer the course of our whole life.<\/p>\n
But all kinds of chance exist.\u00a0 I had assumed we would celebrate our big day with some enjoyable event at our favorite restaurant.\u00a0 But instead, I\u2019ve got two chores to take care of and then I\u2019m waiting on a root canal the next day that won\u2019t let me enjoy food for a while.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s the expression?\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to take the good with the bad.\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s a crummy expression!\u00a0 But also, very true.\u00a0 Oh well.\u00a0 It was a great day at the beach fifty years ago.\u00a0 And there will be more great days to come.\u00a0 So, on with the show.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
