The circle of life.\u00a0 Despite the claim in the song, Disney never shows us the predators, including his highness the King, chowing down on the herbivores that provide the carnivores with their sustenance.\u00a0 Theoretically Mufasa is the apex of the food chain but all of his meals are \u201coff-camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Camera Girl claims to be a wildlife realist and the hawks and vultures, the foxes and coyotes according to her \u201cgotta eat.\u201d\u00a0 So, when a rabbit or a squirrel ends up as a meal somewhere on the property, she shrugs it off, \u201ceveryboody\u2019s gotta eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today one of the local hawks performed its patented power dive a couple of feet away from Camera Girl\u2019s bird feeders and the bird (we think it was a catbird) never knew what hit it.\u00a0 Oh well.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But there is a more gruesome aspect than just the kill.\u00a0 The hawk eats the entire bird while plucking the feathers as it goes.\u00a0 Camera Girl watched this from her kitchen window and I could tell she wasn\u2019t shrugging it off.\u00a0 She has a soft heart.\u00a0 And since she feeds the birds and attracts them to the location, she feels that she was responsible in a way for the predation.<\/p>\n

And all things considered that is true.\u00a0 That hawk would not have caught that catbird today if she didn\u2019t feed those birds every day.\u00a0 But I tried to cheer her up.\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, you\u2019ve been feeding these birds for years.\u00a0 And all those free meals have contributed to the health and longevity of all these birds.\u00a0 With all that extra food they\u2019ve probably produced double the number of hatchlings they would have raised if they were thin and weak.\u00a0 Maybe that very catbird would never have been born if his parents hadn\u2019t eaten the seeds you provided.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, I threw that out there.\u00a0 Hopefully it helped a bit.\u00a0 And I\u2019m sure she\u2019ll bounce back tomorrow when she goes out early to feed Moe and Flo the crows and Poe the raven.\u00a0 And she\u2019s been watching this skunk (of course, it\u2019s Pep\u00e9 Le Pew) that appears at dusk and scratches around where Moe\u2019s food was earlier in the day.\u00a0 He\u2019s almost all white and kind of wide and flat to the ground.\u00a0 He looks like a giant Tribble or a furry version of the Horta.\u00a0 But so far, I\u2019ve managed to avoid it while I\u2019m doing my late afternoon watering.\u00a0 The last thing I need is getting skunked in my own yard.<\/p>\n

Of course, the flipside of all this is the fact that the bird feeders also occasionally attract black bears to the property.\u00a0 The last time the bear used its weight to bend a very substantial steel tube all the way over.\u00a0 I guess it\u2019s within the realm of possibility that one day the circle of life might mean I could be on the menu for Yogi Bear.\u00a0 So, there is that to consider.\u00a0 I\u2019ll mention this to Camera Girl and see if that changes the whole risk to reward ratio for her bird feeding hobby.\u00a0 I tend to doubt it.\u00a0 She really likes those birds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
