June 20, 2025 at 10:42 PM EDT is the Summer Solstice.\u00a0 This is a point of inflection for my year.\u00a0 For the last couple of months, the longer days temporarily color my mood brighter.\u00a0 Added to this is the knowledge that the days are still getting even longer.\u00a0 Even if the weather is often not optimal, I revel in the astronomical ascendancy of the Sun.<\/p>\n

But starting on June 21st<\/sup> the days will be growing shorter.\u00a0 Now granted this is the fairest time of the year.\u00a0 The sun is tropical and the heat sears into my soul.\u00a0 And this is like an elixir of youth for my tired old bones.\u00a0 But psychologically I recognize that the rollercoaster has reached the top of the highest peak and for a split second it is poised between rising and falling.\u00a0 Just long enough for us to look around and see heaven around us just before the bottom drops out of the ride and we plummet back to Earth.<\/p>\n

And so, for the next two months I drink in every photon of sunlight and revel in kids free from school and looking to fill up their time with play.\u00a0 I see that there\u2019s a new Superman movie coming out soon.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s a woke nightmare.\u00a0 Maybe Superman is a Biden\/Harris supporter.\u00a0 But maybe he\u2019s still fighting for truth, justice and the American way.\u00a0 I\u2019ll find out.\u00a0 And if it\u2019s any good I\u2019ll bring the kids.\u00a0 We\u2019ll spend way too much money on lousy popcorn and watery soda.\u00a0 But We\u2019ll get to debate the strengths and weaknesses of the 2025 son of Krypton.\u00a0 Who knows, maybe he\u2019ll surprise me.\u00a0 Or maybe we won\u2019t see it because the reviews are terrible.\u00a0 But we\u2019ll find stuff to do.<\/p>\n

I have a feeling this is the summer we do some fishing.\u00a0 Dunwich is mostly soggy so there are plenty of lakes and ponds full of what pass for bass and trout.\u00a0 I think I can get most of them to cast a line in the water.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t been fishing in twenty-five years.\u00a0 That\u2019s a long time.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s time I did.<\/p>\n

Objectively speaking, I\u2019m a relic.\u00a0 I\u2019m much closer to the end of my life than the beginning and now I can actually feel it.\u00a0 Even maintaining my present vitality requires discipline and work.\u00a0 And even that is a matter of delaying the inevitable.<\/p>\n

And yet, every day is a gift.\u00a0 We interact with our fellow creatures and try to be useful and positive.\u00a0 Encouraging the young and facilitating the efforts of those trying to make it a better place.\u00a0 Those are things that even a relic can accomplish.<\/p>\n

So, here\u2019s the official beginning of Summer 2025.\u00a0 I will do my darndest to make this a successful season for me and Camera Girl and the rest of the clan.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to all of my rituals and all of the little joys of summer.\u00a0 Barbecues, local baseball, fireworks, the Dunwich Fair, Fourth of July, Labor Day and all the rest.\u00a0 We\u2019ll make sure we feel the sun before it retreats back into the hell that is New England Winter.<\/p>\n
