I\u2019ve been listening to some of the movie reviewers about the crop of summer movies.\u00a0 I guess the first \u201ctentpole\u201d film is whatever they\u2019re calling the latest sequel to Jurassic Park.\u00a0 I think the consensus is that it\u2019s a tired derivative rehash of the original concept.\u00a0 It\u2019s also making a ton of money.\u00a0 So, from the studio\u2019s point of view, a success!\u00a0 From an actual sentient movie watcher\u2019s point of view not so much.\u00a0 But as a grandfather of a dinosaur super-enthusiast, it does check a lot of the boxes as a way to bond with said enthusiast.\u00a0 So not a total loss.<\/p>\n
Then there are the latest comic book superhero movies.\u00a0 So, they\u2019ve given the Avengers the summer off and instead they\u2019re taking another crack at \u201cThe Fantastic Four.\u201d\u00a0 Now this has always been a sort of oddball franchise.\u00a0 They\u2019re superpowers are \u201codd.\u201d\u00a0 One is a guy who can stretch his body.\u00a0 Huh?\u00a0 Then there\u2019s a guy who can fly and shoot fire at stuff; well, pretty good, I guess.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s a girl who can become invisible and also has a force field.\u00a0 This is actually the most powerful superpower amongst them.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s a guy who looks like he\u2019s made of rock and is somewhat strong.\u00a0 None of these \u201cheroes\u201d is going to compete with Superman or even Thor.\u00a0 They\u2019re powers kind of suck and they\u2019re relegated to protecting Manhattan from intergalactic troublemakers like Dr. Doom, Galactus or Annihilus.\u00a0 So, if you have a villain that can devour planetary system how does a stretchy guy and a rock stop you?\u00a0 Even forcefield girl and \u201cflame on\u201d boy aren\u2019t that much use.\u00a0 On top of all that apparently the powers that be have decided that forcefield girl will be the girl boss of the movie and there will be much female empowerment on display.\u00a0 Yay?\u00a0 Well, I guess I can skip that one for my grandsons.<\/p>\n
And then there\u2019s another reboot of Superman coming out.\u00a0 Initial reviews hint at the importance of Superman\u2019s \u201cimmigrant\u201d status.\u00a0 Also, there\u2019s been a lot of talk about \u201cinclusion.\u201d\u00a0 Well, that doesn\u2019t bode well in my book.\u00a0 Worst case Superman is protecting cartel gangbangers against Trump\u2019s ICE agents.\u00a0 Best case Superman will be propagandizing the kids about how great it is to be an illegal alien from Krypton.\u00a0 I could be wrong but I\u2019m not seeing a Superman movie in my summer lineup.<\/p>\n
Alright, let\u2019s review.\u00a0 Stupid dinosaur sequel is my best bet.\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 I think I\u2019ll assemble a sci-fi and fantasy film festival of my own.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I\u2019ll do.\u00a0 I\u2019ll arrange a schedule and invite the grandkids over.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s see; Them, Destination: Moon, The Thing from Another World, Forbidden Planet, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix, Terminator, Blade Runner, Independence Day and The Martian.\u00a0 I\u2019ll have to split it up to allow for the ages of the viewers.\u00a0 And then we\u2019ll end on a fantasy note; original Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings.\u00a0 Okay, that\u2019s a starting point.\u00a0 And think of the money I\u2019ll save on tickets and popcorn!\u00a0 photog, you\u2019re a bloody genius!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
