Today was the dreaded ladder day.\u00a0 I have been promising to clean out the gutters on the house and adjoining buildings for quite a while.\u00a0 And because there are levels and other levels and other, other levels it took hours.\u00a0\u00a0 And somehow that damn ladder has gotten heavier over the years.\u00a0 I mean it can\u2019t be me.\u00a0 I\u2019m as strong, skillful, handsome and intelligent as ever.\u00a0 I think it may be that the Earth\u2019s gravitational field has increased over time. \u00a0If I\u2019m ballparking it, I\u2019d say it\u2019s doubled.\u00a0 For that reason, I found it necessary to use \u201cmaximum effort.\u201d\u00a0 But it didn\u2019t help that it was in the high eighties today and high humidity.\u00a0 And if I\u2019ve learned one lesson it\u2019s that badminton birds are very effective at plugging downspouts.\u00a0 From now on badminton is a forbidden sport.\u00a0 Let\u2019s see them get a basketball stuck up there!\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s enough whining.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t manage to break my neck or go into vapor lock so let\u2019s move on.<\/p>\n
I saw that the same company that wasn\u2019t willing to pay $46 million dollars in losses a year for the Late Show was willing to pay $1.5 billion dollars for five more years of South Park.\u00a0 That\u2019s got to make you pause.\u00a0 I remember back in the 1990s when the pilot for that show came out on-line.\u00a0 It had Jesus fighting with Santa Claus.\u00a0 It looked like it had been drawn by a twelve-year-old and it seemed to have about the same emotional maturity.\u00a0 And now the two doofuses who created it are going to be billionaires.\u00a0 Well, only in America, I guess.\u00a0 And that at least makes sense.\u00a0 People want to watch their product.\u00a0 It makes money.\u00a0 It has value.\u00a0 Stephen Colbert and NPR and PBS can\u2019t get enough people to watch their stuff to pay for making it.<\/p>\n
I guess the lesson here is that if you\u2019re an equal opportunity offender (and the makers of South Park are most definitely that) then that doubles your audience and adds a level of authenticity to your story.\u00a0 South Park and its creators; Trey Parker and Matt Stone have insulted and mocked every single powerful figure in one or more episodes over the course of almost thirty years.\u00a0 That\u2019s all presidents, dictators, religious leaders, billionaires, geniuses, generals, movie stars, corporate bigwigs, movie studios, nations, religions, even supernatural beings from Jesus to Satan to Mohammed.\u00a0 They\u2019ve made fun of the woke and MAGA.\u00a0 They offend everyone.\u00a0 And they do it disgustingly.\u00a0 But people will pay to watch their stuff because it\u2019s funny.\u00a0 Disgusting, but funny.<\/p>\n
I think that tells me everything I need to know about why the current media landscape is crumbling.\u00a0 The product on display is really bad and almost no one is willing to cough up the ducats to pay for it.\u00a0 And I believe that is a hopeful situation.\u00a0 A lot of really crappy content will go away.\u00a0 And a lot of it is stuff that annoys me; MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC.\u00a0 What\u2019s left afterward will at least be profitable.\u00a0 Stay tuned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
