{"id":35939,"date":"2026-02-02T05:00:25","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T10:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=35939"},"modified":"2026-02-01T22:23:56","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T03:23:56","slug":"with-extra-butter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/02\/with-extra-butter\/","title":{"rendered":"With Extra Butter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oldest Grandson is a fan of video games and of video game adjacent internet personalities.\u00a0 There is a guy named Markiplier (well, technically that\u2019s an alias) who has made a fortune playing video games on his YouTube channel and currently has something like thirty-seven million followers.\u00a0 I\u2019ve only ever watched a couple of minutes of his content and must confess I don\u2019t see the attraction.\u00a0 I guess it\u2019s because I\u2019m old.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, this guy decided to make a horror movie using his own money and then put it on 3,000 movie screens.\u00a0 It cost him about $3 million to make.\u00a0 And on its first weekend it\u2019s made more than $18 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 In Hollywood the catering budget for a movie that makes $18 million on its first weekend would cost more than $3 million.\u00a0 Anyone who would be employed to open a movie of that size would make at least $5 million in Hollywood.\u00a0 So just based on scale any movie made for less than $3 million is in a completely different league from Hollywood.\u00a0 This movie couldn\u2019t fail with the built in audience it has and almost any Hollywood movie can\u2019t help but fail.\u00a0 Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/paultassi\/2026\/01\/31\/markipliers-iron-lung-quadruples-its-budget-in-a-day-winning-friday-box-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes magazine is touting the new entertainment model that \u201cinfluencers\u201d like Markiplier has pioneered with his movie success<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, this is the third movie I\u2019ve heard of that made a bunch of money because someone with tens of millions of followers on line self-financed it and got his people to buy tickets.\u00a0 Does this show us the future or is this just a blip while the streaming giants kill off or buy up Hollywood?\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s a little bit of both.\u00a0 Markiplier would never get his movie made by a Hollywood studio.\u00a0 And Netflix and Amazon are frantically looking for content that won\u2019t be ignored by the Zoomers.\u00a0 I think what we\u2019re beginning to see is a realization that creative types and Silicon Valley are going to have to blow up the Hollywood model with its bloated budgets and maniacal dependence on poorly written sequels of old intellectual properties.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to have to forget about making crap like \u201cStar Trek: Starfleet Academy\u201d or \u201cStar Wars 37: Search for Obi Wan\u2019s Lesbian Aunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kids around today want to watch stuff that speaks to them.\u00a0 Some of it doesn\u2019t make a whole lot of sense to old people like myself.\u00a0 But it doesn\u2019t have to.\u00a0 What they don\u2019t want is corporate slop disguised as sequels to movies that their grandparents watched as kids.\u00a0 And you really can\u2019t blame them.\u00a0 So next Saturday I\u2019ll be going with Oldest Grandson to see \u201cIron Lung.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019ll leave my expectations at the door and watch it with an open mind.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019ll love it or hate it or just feel kind of confused.\u00a0 But I\u2019ll get a chance to see what the future looks like.\u00a0 And at the very least I know there won\u2019t be a girl-boss character.\u00a0 Apparently, Markiplier Has 90% of the character face time in the movie.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve decided I\u2019m going to splurge on the large popcorn.\u00a0 With extra butter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oldest Grandson is a fan of video games and of video game adjacent internet personalities.\u00a0 There is a guy named Markiplier (well, technically that\u2019s an<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,3366,239,1263,237,4,243],"tags":[5130,5129,5128,5127],"class_list":["post-35939","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","category-life-in-dunwich","category-movie-reviews","category-stuff-that-personally-interests-me-miscellaneous","category-reviews","category-sff","category-sff-movie-reviews","tag-independent-movie-makers","tag-influencer","tag-iron-lung","tag-markiplier"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
