There are several YouTube channels that use an AI generated voice and image of Richard Feynman (Feynman Reborn, Think Like Feynman, Physics with Feynman) to discuss scientific topics; physics, astronomy, technology, etc.).\u00a0 Now this does seem a little weird.\u00a0 Why use the AI simulation of a scientist whose heyday was eighty years ago?\u00a0 But if you watch a few of them you realize that Feynman\u2019s voice has a very natural and unpretentious style and the authors have tried to match his approach of making the mysteries of science accessible to people who don\u2019t possess sophisticated technical expertise.\u00a0 Whether he\u2019s explaining quantum mechanics or the impact of mass to energy conversion in a fission reaction, his reasonable, clear speaking style is highly engaging.<\/p>\n

Today I was watching a video<\/a> in which he took the position that the chances of us ever receiving a message from another intelligent civilization travelling around another star was basically zero.\u00a0 Now, he wasn\u2019t dogmatic.\u00a0 He freely admitted that the calculations involved contained at least four or five variables that no one really knows the correct probability of.\u00a0 In other words, how do you determine what the \u201caverage\u201d length of time that a technological civilization lasts?\u00a0 Ours has lasted at most a few hundred years.\u00a0 But even that is not a real data point.\u00a0 We still don\u2019t have a way to \u201csend\u201d a signal out to other star systems powerfully enough to be heard.\u00a0 And we definitely don\u2019t know how long our civilization will last.\u00a0 So, each of the \u201cfactors\u201d for figuring out how many interstellar civilizations there are is either somewhat speculative or just plain guessing.\u00a0 And by the end of the video, he was championing the case that we will never \u201chear\u201d from anyone \u201cout there.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what was nice was that he openly admitted that he had no authoritative proof and in fact negative proof would always be inconclusive.\u00a0 And he also said he would love very much to be proven wrong.\u00a0 I guess I\u2019m really saying I like the way that the maker of the video remained humble in making his case.\u00a0 Of course, you could say he\u2019s hiding behind the great man by using his image.\u00a0 But I will admit he\u2019s picked a very good \u201cspokesman\u201d in Feynman.<\/p>\n

And of course, this is all very timely with the recent opening of the very popular movie \u201cProject Hail Mary.\u201d\u00a0 Right now, \u201cRocky\u201d is a box office star and everyone\u2019s favorite intelligent extraterrestrial rock crab.\u00a0 But the fact that \u201cFeynman\u201d just told me that Rocky doesn\u2019t exist and that we could never meet him doesn\u2019t destroy the fun and excitement of the story.\u00a0 Because at the end of the video \u201cFeynman\u201d sums up the situation by saying that even if we are the only intelligent life in the whole cosmos that in no way takes away from the wonder of our existence.\u00a0 In fact, he counters that if we are unique that makes everything about us more astounding and everything around us more precious; the air, the warmth, the miraculous mechanism of life itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
