{"id":3992,"date":"2018-08-20T07:11:05","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T11:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=3992"},"modified":"2020-02-25T21:46:13","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T02:46:13","slug":"galaxys-edge-volume-5-sword-of-the-legion-a-science-fiction-book-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/20\/galaxys-edge-volume-5-sword-of-the-legion-a-science-fiction-book-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Galaxy\u2019s Edge (Volume 5) \u2013 Sword of the Legion \u2013 A Science Fiction Book Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/07\/16\/galaxys-edge-volume-4-attack-of-shadows-a-science-fiction-book-review\/\">Galaxy\u2019s Edge (Volume 4) \u2013 Attack of Shadows \u2013 A Science Fiction Book Review<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jason Anspach and Nick Cole have now consistently produced a series of military science fiction adventure stories that compares favorably to the better products in the genre from whatever era one might choose.\u00a0 And I am being specific.\u00a0 This is science fiction not Tolstoy.\u00a0 The criterion is enjoyment not enlightenment or prose purity.\u00a0 They write a story that has interesting characters caught up in a cataclysmic moment in the history of their science fictional civilization.\u00a0 With respect to the question I asked in the review of the first installment, that is whether the authors could build on a well written military science fiction story about a small battle and produce a series that holds the reader\u2019s interest, the answer is an emphatic yes!\u00a0 Here we are at book five and I\u2019m completely sold.\u00a0 The story keeps expanding and becoming more complex and interesting.\u00a0 The range of characters keeps growing and they are varied and entertaining.\u00a0 Once again, this is not deathless prose.\u00a0 It is a very well written science fiction series that can hold its head up among any of the favorites in its genre.<\/p>\n<p>Getting back to the review of the book, the action begins before the end of the previous volume, \u201cAttack of Shadows.\u201d\u00a0 In that book, the Black Fleet was attacking Tarrago in order to capture its shipyards.\u00a0 The Republic and the Black Fleet needed those shipyards for the coming war.\u00a0 The majority of the present book chronicles a kill team working to destroy those shipyards.\u00a0 And like the battle scenes from the earlier books the action is non-stop and well written.\u00a0 We renew our acquaintance with Dark Ops Team Victory.\u00a0 And then the story collides with Wraith and his shipload of oddballs.\u00a0 Here two threads of the larger story touch and the last quarter of the book lurches off in a completely unexpected direction and we meet an even more sinister force than Goth Sullus.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m starting to like old Goth.\u00a0 He seems conflicted about having to kill old friends.\u00a0 I\u2019m really looking forward to a more thorough understanding of his back story.\u00a0 I won\u2019t go into details but suffice it to say that the new threat to the Galaxy is much more existential than the Black Fleet and its leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSword of the Legion\u201d is lots of fun and is one more stepping stone in the journey that is Galaxy\u2019s Edge.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve come this far you either like the series or you have an OCD thing going on.\u00a0 This book is highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/01\/galaxys-edge-volume-6-prisoners-of-darkness-a-science-fiction-book-review\/\">Galaxy\u2019s Edge (Volume 6) \u2013 Prisoners of Darkness \u2013 A Science Fiction Book Review<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Galaxy\u2019s Edge (Volume 4) \u2013 Attack of Shadows \u2013 A Science Fiction Book Review &nbsp; Jason Anspach and Nick Cole have now consistently produced a<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[237,4,242],"tags":[68,979,2360,637,79,38,44,265],"class_list":["post-3992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-reviews","category-sff","category-sff-book-reviews","tag-book-review","tag-galaxys-edge","tag-galaxys-edge-book","tag-jason-anspach","tag-nick-cole","tag-review","tag-sci-fi","tag-science-fiction"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
