{"id":4384,"date":"2018-09-29T22:15:11","date_gmt":"2018-09-30T02:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=4384"},"modified":"2018-09-29T22:15:11","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T02:15:11","slug":"the-great-revolt-by-salena-zito-and-brad-todd-a-book-review-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/29\/the-great-revolt-by-salena-zito-and-brad-todd-a-book-review-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Revolt \u2013 by Salena Zito and Brad Todd \u2013 A Book Review \u2013 Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Part 1 of this review I said that there were a number of personal accounts by Trump voters in swing states that provided remarkable insight into how Trump was able to topple the Midwestern \u201cBlue Wall.\u201d\u00a0 After finishing up the book I can confirm that this is the case.\u00a0 But this only one of several facets that the book reveals about the current state of the American electorate and how it intersects with the political parties, the media, corporate America and the globalist elites in general.<\/p>\n<p>I will divide the review into appropriate topics that correspond to the book\u2019s logical components.\u00a0 But first I\u2019ll give a general synopsis of the overall conclusion of why Donald Trump was elected President of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that Donald Trump ended up with a healthy majority of electoral votes (304 to 227) because just ten counties in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa flipped their votes from Democrat to Republican.\u00a0 Each of these counties had voted for Obama in both 2008 and 2012.\u00a0 Trump was able to convince Democratic voters to vote for a Republican presidential candidate.\u00a0 The rest of the book is devoted to figuring out why this happened and what the larger significance is.<\/p>\n<p>The book is divided into a number of chapters, each named after a particular group of Trump voters that because of their circumstances either flipped from the Democrats to Trump or stayed with Trump despite an ideological conflict with him.<\/p>\n<p>The categories are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red Blooded and Blue Collared<\/li>\n<li>Perot-istas<\/li>\n<li>Rough Rebounders<\/li>\n<li>Girl Gun Power<\/li>\n<li>Rotary Reliables<\/li>\n<li>King Cyrus Christians<\/li>\n<li>Silent Suburban Moms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The category names are probably transparent enough to more or less figure out what each group is defined by.<\/p>\n<p>For each of these categories there are several individuals who exemplify the profile but live in a different location.\u00a0 These locations are rural, town and cities located in the ten counties in question:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lee County, Iowa<\/li>\n<li>Howard County, Iowa<\/li>\n<li>Macomb County, Michigan<\/li>\n<li>Lake County, Michigan<\/li>\n<li>Ashtabula County, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Stark County, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Erie County, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>Luzerne County, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>Kenosha County, Wisconsin<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Vernon County, Wisconsin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In each of these categories and in each of these locations we are shown how the Democrats went from being the natural or default choice to instead become the reason to believe in the unlikely personage of Donald J. Trump.\u00a0 Although the list includes some individuals who are affluent and highly educated they all reside in areas of the country that have been either taken for granted or abandoned by the Democrat Elite.\u00a0 They range from pillars of the community and entrepreneurs to folks who have barely survived hard economic times that coincided with personal tragedy and challenge.\u00a0 But they all look to Donald Trump to correct problems.\u00a0 Economic problems, cultural problems, moral problems.\u00a0 Not all of these people are conservatives or even moderates.\u00a0 Some are demonstrably old school Democrats.\u00a0 But what they all are is self-described Americans.\u00a0 None of them think of themselves as citizens of the world.\u00a0 None of them have bought into the globalist perspective and many of them are obviously mourning for the death of their homes.\u00a0 Places like Erie and Freeland Pennsylvania are for all intents and purposes dead.\u00a0 There aren\u2019t any growing industries and even the few employers left are slowly moving out to the sunbelt.\u00a0 Young adults leave for opportunities elsewhere.\u00a0 Parents and grandparents stay because they can\u2019t sell their houses.\u00a0 Who would buy them?\u00a0 All they are left with is memories of happier times when they were part of a thriving community with a future and the dignity of earning a living and raising their families.\u00a0 In these places voting for Donald Trump is almost a reflex.\u00a0 A final self-defensive movement.\u00a0 But other examples show communities that are still viable and even thriving but recognizing that the Democrats don\u2019t pretend to care about the values that differentiate these communities from the progressive narrative.\u00a0 Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio.\u00a0 These are all places that are seeing themselves ignored because they are the areas where remnant blue collar communities are supposed to disappear and be replaced by the new constituencies that are earmarked for inclusion in the \u201ccoalition of the ascendant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the next installment I\u2019ll give my thoughts on some of the stories and what I think they mean to me, in other words, how they square with my own understanding of the American situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Part 1 of this review I said that there were a number of personal accounts by Trump voters in swing states that provided remarkable<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[241,5,237,6],"tags":[1353,1348,1354,1355,1347,1346,16],"class_list":["post-4384","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-book-reviews","category-current-events","category-reviews","category-trump","tag-book-reviews","tag-brad-todd","tag-current-events","tag-reviews","tag-salena-zito","tag-salena-zito-and-brad-todd","tag-trump"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
