Politico &#8211; A Very Dokken Christmas, Part II:\u00a0 Tooth and Nail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We continue our yuletide celebration of Dokken with the 1984\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tooth-Nail-DOKKEN\/dp\/B00H4L3G0Y\/\">Tooth and Nail<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 After the tepid performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/20\/a-very-dokken-christmas-part-i-breaking-the-chains-1983\/\">1983\u2019s <em>Breaking the Chains<\/em><\/a>, Dokken found themselves in debt to the tune of a cool half-a-million, and Elektra contemplated dropping the band.\u00a0 Don Dokken and his management convinced the label to give the group one last shot; thus, the tenacious title.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That tenacity paid off, and is heard in every riff of <em>Tooth and Nail<\/em>.\u00a0 If <em>Breaking the Chains<\/em> had some gems, <em>Tooth and Nail<\/em> shines like a diamond throughout.\u00a0 Indeed, it\u2019s a testament to the band\u2019s songwriting that their third album, <em>Under Lock and Key<\/em>, would improve upon <em>Tooth and Nail<\/em>\u2019s sonic attack.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, this album rocks, while also offering up more pop-oriented tunes.\u00a0 Dokken opens the album with an atmospheric instrumental opener that\u2019s just the right length.\u00a0 I\u2019m a big fan of extended instrumental introductions, so long as they lead somewhere.\u00a0 \u201cWithout Warning\u201d lives up to its title, as it seamlessly, suddenly transitions into the full-frontal assault of the title track, \u201cTooth and Nail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTooth and Nail\u201d is the kind of opening rocker that should start every metal album.\u00a0 The track is fast and fun, with an excellent, memorable chorus.\u00a0 Don Dokken had been working with a vocal coach in Germany, and his improved range and technique are evident on \u201cTooth and Nail,\u201d as he hits a stratospheric \u201cStraight to the top!\u201d toward the end of the song.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are several other standout tracks, including the power ballad \u201cAlone Again,\u201d a song that helped boost flagging album sales.\u00a0 Some listeners scoff at power ballads, but I love them if they\u2019re executed well, with solid dynamic contrast, memorable choruses, interesting bridges, etc.\u00a0 \u201cAlone Again\u201d doesn\u2019t quite get to the level of, say, Heart\u2019s \u201cAlone\u201d by these metrics, but it\u2019s fun to sing in your car.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For my money, though, \u201cWhen Heaven Comes Down\u201d is a solid, underappreciated rocker, one that demonstrates the strength of the backing vocals.\u00a0 Don\u2019t underestimate the power of good backing vocals (see also:\u00a0 Michael Anthony on almost every Van Halen song).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBullets to Spare\u201d and \u201cTurn on the Action,\u201d the album\u2019s closer, are similarly rockin\u2019 affairs, though I\u2019m partial to the latter.\u00a0 \u201cBullets to Spare\u201d is the kind of cheeky tune that makes me love the macho humor of glam metal, but \u201cTurn on the Action\u201d sounds like the kind of tune that could have come on the heels of \u201cTooth and Nail\u201d to make for the iconic double-rocker-opener that I crave.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, <em>Tooth and Nail<\/em> helped get the band off life-support, and set the stage for the exquisite <em>Under Lock and Key<\/em>\u2014the subject of our the third and final album in our series <em>A Very Dokken Christmas<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We continue our yuletide celebration
