Twilight Zone \u2013 Complete Series Review \u2013 Season 5 Episode 5 \u2013 The Last Night of a Jockey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mickey Rooney plays Michael Grady, a crooked jockey who has just been given a life long suspension by the Racing Commission.\u00a0 Grady is an angry, bitter little man who feels he\u2019s been given a bad deal by life and everyone he\u2019s ever met.\u00a0 Sitting in a cheap hotel room he rails against life, when suddenly he hears a voice laughing at him.\u00a0 After bickering with the hidden voice, he finds out it\u2019s his alter ego, his conscience talking to him from inside his head and, when he looks there, from inside any mirror in sight.\u00a0 The reflection in the mirror is a more sophisticated, less disheveled version of Grady and he takes his more corporeal self to task for his shabby life of crime and dishonor.\u00a0 But finally, when he\u2019s through mocking him he asks Grady to tell him his greatest desire, his secret wish.\u00a0 Grady tells him he wants to be big.\u00a0 He wants to be tall.\u00a0 He wants to be able to walk down the street without people looking down on him and laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Grady goes to sleep and when he wakes up, he\u2019s about eight feet tall.\u00a0 Now he\u2019s ecstatic and plans all the things he\u2019s never been able to do and all the girls who won\u2019t disrespect him for his short stature.\u00a0 And he asks his conscience if he\u2019s impressed with him now.\u00a0 But the reflection tells him that he\u2019s not impressed.\u00a0 He thinks Grady\u2019s dreams were tiny.\u00a0 He said if he had asked to win the Kentucky Derby honestly or done some heroic deed then he would have been a big man but as things stand, he considers Grady a very small man indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Then a phone call comes through from the Racing Commission telling Grady he\u2019s been reinstated.\u00a0 Grady is once again ecstatic and gloats to the mirror how everything is going his way.\u00a0 But now the alter ego is hysterical with laughter and finally Grady realizes the joke.\u00a0 He\u2019s too big to ever ride as a jockey again.\u00a0 And suddenly he grows even taller.\u00a0 Now he must be twelve feet tall and he falls into a desperate rage and breaks up the furniture and smashes the windows begging his alter ego to make him small again.<\/p>\n<p>This episode has a number of plot elements alike with an earlier episode, Season 2 Episode 3, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2019\/02\/20\/the-twilight-zone-complete-series-review-season-2-episode-3-nervous-man-in-a-four-dollar-room\/\">Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 In both episodes an alter ego carries on a dialog through a mirror with his flesh and blood self.\u00a0 In both cases that self is a disreputable man in a fleabag hotel room who has let his life fall apart.\u00a0 But the difference between the plots is that the earlier one has a happy ending and this one doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 Here the alter ego while much more powerful than the one in Nervous Man doesn\u2019t take over control of his body and straighten things out.\u00a0 Instead he punishes his weak, selfish other half by giving him what he says he wants but in spades.\u00a0 He makes him a giant that will be just as miserably isolated from life as his short stature previously made him.<\/p>\n<p>This is an odd episode to evaluate.\u00a0 Standing on its own it is an interesting premise and Mickey Rooney does a good job of breathing life into the dual roles.\u00a0 But knowing what was done with Nervous Man makes me dissatisfied with the ending.\u00a0 It\u2019s spiteful and somehow seems too extreme.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019m too soft-hearted.\u00a0 B-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatfinger.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7742\" src=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picture-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3909\" height=\"851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picture-4.png 3909w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picture-4-300x65.png 300w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picture-4-768x167.png 768w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/picture-4-1024x223.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto,
