I waited yesterday instead of writing a post.\u00a0 I wanted to sift through my thoughts.<\/p>\n

My opinion is we\u2019re in a lot of trouble.\u00a0 And I\u2019m not talking about Democrats and Second Amendment attacks and presidential polls.\u00a0 Put all that aside for a minute.<\/p>\n

Connor Betts was 24.\u00a0 Patrick Crusius is 21.\u00a0 We have young men who are of an age where they should be enjoying life to its fullest.\u00a0 Instead they\u2019re flushing their lives down the drain in a senseless orgy of violence.\u00a0 And it\u2019s happening more and more frequently.\u00a0 Without a doubt, the ones committing these crimes are the most damaged of their generation.\u00a0 They are probably terrible misfits that don\u2019t feel empathy and live inside the tiny world of their own thoughts.\u00a0 There have always been people like this and there have always been crimes like these.\u00a0 But nowhere near as many.<\/p>\n

What I\u2019m afraid we are doing is widening a window of people who can fall into this kind of trap.\u00a0 Adolescence is a rough time, especially for males.\u00a0 Without someone watching out for them it\u2019s easy to get involved in destructive behavior.\u00a0 And that someone no longer exists.\u00a0 Nobody is watching out for these kids.\u00a0 Mom and Dad are both working.\u00a0 Many times, there isn\u2019t even another brother or sister around to communicate with.\u00a0 No one even knows or cares if they go to school.\u00a0 Work doesn\u2019t leave any room for these kids.\u00a0 So, they spend their time on the internet or video games.\u00a0 If they fall behind in school or get into trouble often the parents and teachers will paper over it and make believe that something didn\u2019t happen or didn\u2019t mean anything.<\/p>\n

And in the last ten years we have added a new dimension.\u00a0 The Millennials grew up in a world where there were no jobs to be had.\u00a0 So, after spending twelve years bored in school, without a job you live in your parents\u2019 basement and have no adult life or even prospects of it.\u00a0 So, in addition to the truly disturbed individuals we are pushing the fragile normal people into the same place.\u00a0 They\u2019re angry and are looking for someone to punish for their wasted lives.<\/p>\n

The mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton are, as always, shocking.\u00a0 But what isn\u2019t a surprise is that these two young men were dangerously mentally ill long before their rampages.\u00a0 Just looking at the pictures and reading the accounts of their histories should be enough to convince people that what we have in this country isn\u2019t a gun problem, it\u2019s societal dysfunction causing a mental health emergency.\u00a0 Look at the kid in Ohio.\u00a0 The stories contain the fact that while in high school he had a list of kids he wanted to kill and a list of girls he wanted to rape.\u00a0 If you\u2019re the parent of this boy what else do you need to hear to know that your son is a ticking time bomb?\u00a0 And maybe they did know.\u00a0 And maybe it\u2019s just where we are as a country that they didn\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 What would I have done in that case?\u00a0 What can be done?\u00a0 These aren\u2019t easy questions to answer.\u00a0 But they sure do have to be answered.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a whole continent full of young men growing up in a world that doesn\u2019t value their talents and doesn\u2019t have anything to keep them gainfully employed.\u00a0 That is a recipe for extinction.<\/p>\n

So other than a lot of talk, what does all this mean?\u00a0 Well for the most deeply disturbed we have to stop thinking that antidepressants will allow criminally insane individuals to walk among us.\u00a0 These people need to be institutionalized for life.\u00a0 That\u2019s for their own good but mostly for ours.<\/p>\n

But for the run of the mill kid growing up in America there\u2019s still plenty that needs to be done.\u00a0 What my take away from this is spend a lot of time with your sons and your grandsons.\u00a0 Don\u2019t assume that just by keeping them in school and driving them to soccer practice that they\u2019re okay.\u00a0 Talk about the future with them.\u00a0 Talk realistically and constructively about how kids transition into adults.\u00a0 Know their friends.\u00a0 Check their homework and see if they\u2019re prepared for tests.\u00a0 Pay attention!\u00a0 Be aware of their activities on the internet.\u00a0 Help them to socialize in a constructive way.\u00a0 And don\u2019t let them feel alone or bored.\u00a0 A kid is better off with a manual labor job than sitting around alone all day.<\/p>\n

You may think that these things only happen to the worst of the worst people.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the case.\u00a0 The world that we live in isolates us and destroys our communities, families and especially our sons.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let it.\u00a0 Even the kids who don\u2019t go off the deep end are struggling in an environment that\u2019s almost unfathomable even for adults.\u00a0 Help them!\u00a0 Adapt to the problems, compensate for the dysfunctional arrangements we live under.\u00a0 Save your kids.\u00a0 They\u2019re the only possession of value you have.<\/p>\n
