{"id":9815,"date":"2020-01-31T21:17:30","date_gmt":"2020-02-01T02:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=9815"},"modified":"2020-01-31T21:17:30","modified_gmt":"2020-02-01T02:17:30","slug":"johnny-cash-american-iv-the-man-comes-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/31\/johnny-cash-american-iv-the-man-comes-around\/","title":{"rendered":"Johnny Cash \u2013 American IV \u2013 The Man Comes Around"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of his life Johnny Cash recorded a multi-album project.\u00a0 Listening to this album it\u2019s unmistakable that we\u2019re listening to a man at the end of his life.\u00a0 His voice is in tatters but for some of these songs it\u2019s actually quite effective. \u00a0The songs were a very divergent group that crossed over popular styles that spanned generations.\u00a0 There\u2019s everything from modern songs like Nine Inch Nails\u2019 \u201cHurt\u201d to old standards like \u201cDanny Boy\u201d and \u201cWe\u2019ll Meet Again.\u201d\u00a0 And he included pop songs from the 1960s and 1970s like the Beatles\u2019 \u201cIn My Life,\u201d the Eagles\u2019 \u201cDesperado\u201d and Simon and Garfunkle\u2019s \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water.\u201d\u00a0 He also includes several country western standards like \u201cSam Hall\u201d and \u201cStreets of Laredo.\u201d\u00a0 But the highlight of the album is the title song \u201cThe Man Comes Around.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a dark vision of the Judgement Day.\u00a0 Cash claims that some of the lines came to him in a strange dream.\u00a0 I listen to this song when I\u2019m feeling particularly pessimistic about the future.<\/p>\n<p>Not all the songs work for me.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll guess that not everyone will agree with my picks but here they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Man Comes Around<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m So Lonesome I Could Cry<\/li>\n<li>Streets of Laredo<\/li>\n<li>Sam Hall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For older die-hard fans of Cash this will be a bitter-sweet experience because of the circumstances of this music.\u00a0 But I think the title song is a very stirring song that\u2019s worth a listen by country music fans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of his life Johnny Cash recorded a multi-album project.\u00a0 Listening to this album it\u2019s unmistakable that we\u2019re listening to a man at<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[552,551,237],"tags":[555,1309,1544,38,1355],"class_list":["post-9815","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-country-music-reviews","category-music-reviews","category-reviews","tag-country-music","tag-country-music-review","tag-johnny-cash","tag-review","tag-reviews"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
