I rented the Sony 200 – 600 mm zoom for an upcoming bald eagle photographic trip. I put it next to some of my other lenses for a size comparison. Darn thing weighs almost 5 pounds so it’ll have to be a monopod for me because the trip will be pretty long. Look how small the FE 35mm f\2.8 looks. I’m interested in this lens but I’m hoping it’s sharp enough to warrant the $2,000 price tag.

You’re going to have start charging for these photographs if you rent that thing any longer than a weekend. Yikes!
I’m renting it for the week but this lens is reasonable compared to some I’ve rented before. Renting is a good way to try out prospective purchases.
I can sorta duplicate that lens using my old A mount 70-300 on an adaptor to my 43 MB A7RII. The 43MB would allow me to crop way in and still maintain enough MP to have a usable image. I originally bought the 70-300 A mount, a G series lens, in 2010 and used it extensively on my old Sony A850 camera. I quickly found that a disproportionate number of my favorite shot came through this lens. Happily, I found that the lens is very successful on my A7RII & A7III cameras using an adaptor. It definitely is a specialist lens. But that’s the beauty of renting. It will serve my purpose for this eagle trip and it’ll give me a chance to judge for myself just how good or bad Sony’s lens program is. Buying it is a different proposition. It would have to be amazingly good and I would have to have a regular use for the lens.
