If you’ll allow a suggestion, I’ve never or only rarely, have managed to make a pleasing photo of anything in harsh direct sunlight. Morning light is good, the golden light of late afternoon is perfect and mid-day shade works, but direct sunlight, almost never. Too contrasty, deep shadows, too harsh.

Good point Tom. But in my defense those darn peonies fall apart almost as soon as they open up. Sometimes you just have to make do.
