Quail I do believe. I’ve shot a fair number of these in my earlier days.
Funny thing, I grew up as an outdoor sportsman with a large amount of hunting and fishing. In my later years, I’ve somehow morphed into some stranger who it quite queasy about killing for sport. I would now kill in a heartbeat to protect or feed my family but not for the “fun” of it.
There’s a funny story about the origin of that bird. I ordered a bunch of quail from a breeder. I bought a shelter and feeding system and wanted them to inhabit the fields and woods near me. So I released them and the whole flock took wing in a squadron and headed for the horizon and never looked back. For the next few days I saw one or two but that was it. Apparently they’re not completely gone but where they spend their time is a mystery to me.
