The angle of the writing surface has to be inaccurate. The job of a scribe, reproducing books freehand, had to require a threshold of boredom exceeding that of a three toed tree sloth.
Yes, probably boring. But if the choice was between agricultural labor or scribbling I’ll bet those monks would choose the pen every time.
