Every year the local painted and snapping turtle females trek across the field headed for their egg laying spots. Other than taking their pictures I leave them studiously alone. I hope to get some good basking shots of them this year with my new 200mm-600mm telephoto lens. They’re not very flashy but they’re at least bigger than the bugs I photograph and easier than the very flighty hummingbirds.
All these things, turtles, frogs, toads, salamanders, are like magic to my two-year-old granddaughter when she sees them for the first time in my yard. And because I was born in the city I enjoy her wonder even more.
He’s a grumpy little guy!

There is a pond behind my parents’ house. There are literally hundreds of turtles down there. Most of them are painted and snapping turtles.
