If you’ve ever been into cameras you’ll notice occasional affinity between a particular camera and lens combo. One such pairing is my #2 camera, a Sony a7IV, a Tamron 70-300 f5.6 zoom. The shots are crystal clear, the colors vibrant and a nice smooth bokeh (the out of focus area). The lens isn’t expensive as things go these days but I consistently get great results.

Nice shot! I have a 75-300 F4-5.6 Canon that came with the kit I got,it is not bad and sometimes I cheat and use it for detail shots more like a macro. I don’t think the out of focus is as nice especially in that usage. My brother in law also dumped his kit that included a Canon EFS image stabilized 55-250. Its glass seems to be nicer than mine and the IS means I have more shutter speeds available for hand holding. I’m afraid my 75-300 isn’t getting much love anymore. Oh and your Siamese seems to be looking… Read more »
Here’s another with a better bokeh example. This is hand held at 300mm though the distance was only around 60′.
For decades I was a competitive rifle shooter and the offhand (standing) position at 200 yards was a real challenge to develop methods of holding still.
My Dad was a semi-professional photographer (did weddings, family portraits etc with his Mamiya C330 TLR) and I learned some tricks from him (although a TLR has a totally different body posture to an SLR). I can hold better than the rule of thumb 1/focal length, but not too much (I’ve hand held the 300mm at 300mm tracking some ducks in flight and got pretty good results at 1/125. But it’s hard and a lot of times you still move. And even if I had a tripod sturdy enough setting it up for an animal (like a cat) can be… Read more »
