It drove the Germans nuts! We would expend more shells in a single barrage than they had available to use in a week.

How to identify an unknown force in your area:
You can identify an unknown force by firing one shot and judging the response. If the unknowns respond with precise, regimented rifle fire, they are British. If they respond with heavy machinegun fire, they are German. But if nothing happens for a few minutes, then your whole position gets leveled by artillery, they are American.

If they surrender, they’re French.

As I understand it, the General of the French Defense forces met the Germans entering Paris in June 1940 with these words: “Table for 50,000? This way Monsieur.”
