“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. They will practice Indian yoga and all its exercises, observe a strict regimen of diet, learn the literature of the whole world – all because they cannot get on with themselves and have not the slightest faith that anything useful could ever come out of their own souls.”
Carl Jung
There are times, in a combat zone, when things are still and you are by yourself, that you will take out your own soul and look at it. Some can stare into the abyss, some see the abyss staring back at them.
The turbulence of life makes it difficult to remember you even have an existence of your own. Family, job, the news. It reminds me of that Theodore Sturgeon short story “And Now the News…”.
