As usual, the Weather Service has decided to mess with me. Instead of heading for Nova Scotia this crummy hurricane with a Frenchman’s name is going to annoy me this Sunday. I think it’s going to be 85 mph and they are talking about 3-5 inches of rain. Sure why not? We’ve had about twenty inches of rain so far this summer. Why not five more? The local government is talking about it like it’s the apocalypse and as usual everyone is loading up on toilet paper and canned food. My generator is good for about a week of running so I guess if all the wires go down we’ll have power but it may interfere with my internet access so that would stink. Ah well.

Wish you a good recovery from the storm. After all is well, I would be more than curious about your generator set up. After the winter storm here in TX, I am seriously considering
getting a generator and any tips would be helpful. Thanks.
Neil, if power outages are going to be short and infrequent then one of the portable gas driven units will be sufficient. But we now have longer outages several times a year where I live and in the winter it would be more than an inconvenience. If you can’t heat a house in the winter the pipes freeze and you’re going to have big expensive job to repair it. Where we are when a major outage occurs you have everyone waiting in line at the gas stations refilling their generators every day or even more often. So I would recommend… Read more »
Down here on the Gulf Coast, we get to freak out regulary. It gets predictable, nobody preps for anything and all the stores and gas stations are jammed.
You folks wouldn’t even consider this a hurricane. It’s supposed to land as an 80 mph category one. Here it’s being heralded as the storm of the century. Of course there’s nothing funny about high winds. Replacing roof shingles is no reason for laughs but they overblow the hype. Flooded basements will be the biggest problem we’ll see from this event. And those folks have my sympathy. That kind of clean up is sweaty, dirty and discouraging work.
Thank you for the tips and I appreciate the offer to further help. Now I need to climb the inertia hill.
Oh I know that hill. I have a devil of a time even writing down the list of things I should have already done.
Stay safe, friend.
Thanks Tyler. But by the storm gets to me it’ll be a bad tropical storm and more of a nuisance than a danger. There’s a good chance that it will knock out our power for a week though. I think I have enough fuel to make it through on the generator.
