I find myself having to go farther back along the timeline of country & western music to hear ‘real’ genre songs. Yes, music evolves and goes through changes, but at what point does it ‘jump the shark’ in terms of not even resembling a shell of what C&W is supposed to be?
I think it happened around six or seven years ago in Country. There were these songs that were a parody of country music. The whole song was a moronic chant of him getting into his big truck and drinkin’ some shine and goin’ to a club to meet some girl. Maybe there were fifteen words in the song. It might as well have been some stupid rap song. I’m sure he had a cowboy hat and boots in the music video that must have been made for it. Yes. Once it started sounding like rap music with boots, that was the sign the corporate suits in Nashville were calling the shots on what the ‘new sound’ should be.
Although, there are still some great artists out there. I may have already mentioned him before, but Ryan Bingham is a great new(ish) artist making good music. His album Mescalito is highly recommended. If you have time, listen to his first song ‘Southside of Heaven’. Definitely Texan approved. 🙂
Yes, Mescalito has a number of good tracks. It was funny to see Bingham show up as an actor on that nighttime soap “Yellowstone.” At least they let him sing from time to time.
