We hear a constant clamor for rights, rights, always rights, but so very little about responsibility. And we have forgotten God. The need now is for selflessness, for a spirit of sacrifice, for a willingness to put aside personal gains for the salvation of the whole Western world.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
“for a willingness to put aside personal gains for the salvation of the whole Western world.”
Have to disagree with Alex on this to some extent. I think that one of the central tenets of capitalism is that a prosperous society is created by many independent agents working to their own betterment.
As you say, to some extent. Solzhenitsyn lived in a society that denied its citizens any freedom. But looking at ours he noted the opposite problem, the complete lack of responsibility by some quarters of society. No restraint on sexual license, no loyalty to spouses or children by parents. No loyalty toward the country by the rich and the corporations that benefited from the sacrifices of the rust-belt citizens when they provided the engine that won WW II. Some moderate balance and restraint of absolute freedom seems necessary.
