Does there truly exist an insuperable contradiction between religion and science? Can religion be superseded by science? The answers to these questions have, for centuries, given rise to considerable dispute and, indeed, bitter fighting. Yet, in my own mind there can be no doubt that in both cases a dispassionate consideration can only lead to a negative answer.

Quantum theory put paid to the purely deterministic universe. Proponents of a deterministic universe state that, given the precise initial state (or any particular later state) of the universe, the entirety of the universe is determined and knowable. Maybe so, but there’s a fly in the ointment: the precise state of this universe isn’t knowable. The exact position, velocity and vector of any object exists as a smear of probabilities. There are curtains beyond which we can’t see, realities we can’t perceive, infinities in time and space both macro and micro. There are 10^25th more “clock ticks” in every second… Read more »
