If the lesson is that massive public bloodbaths are acceptable public policy, I’d say that the 20th Century certainly reinforced that!
I think it might be the case that the French Revolution was a bigger shock to the world in its time than the Russian Revolution was to our time. Joseph de Maistre I think was still a monarchist and seeing the Bourbon king beheaded was earthshaking.
