Back then it was the cutting edge of war technology. It must have been impressive.
When I was just a wee bairne, We lived in a house a couple of miles off the departure end of the runway at Westover AFB (I was SAC-umcised at birth!) I used to lie on the grass and watch the B-52s and KC-135s roar overhead every day. MITOs were especially thrilling!
The Cold War was a major part of the mid-century. But mostly we never thought about it.
