I rented it last summer and bought it after Christmas. I agree with you about the portrait aspect. I used it for a bunch of photos of my newborn granddaughter. The eye AF worked very well. The lens is plenty sharp. Probably too sharp for ladies over a certain age.

I’ve got a program called Portrait Professional. It deals with that and a number of other issues as well.
Failing that, if you have Photoshop (I know you don’t (yet)), when the photo opens in Adobe Camera Raw, you can dial the sharpness down.
90mm macro, buying or renting? I’ve got that lens, it also works well for portraits.
