In the midst of America’s current summer of discontent, this is an appropriate time to reflect on the nation’s founding, some 244 years ago. On Independence Day, July 4, let us not forget to think about the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence – and the prices many paid for their respective commitments to forming a new nation.
The Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They’d been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2 and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes.
• Five of the 56 Declaration signers were captured by the British and tortured as traitors.
• Nine of the 56 Declaration signers fought and died in the American Revolution.
• Four other of the 56 Declaration signers lost their sons in the Continental Army or had sons who were captured.
• At least a dozen of the 56 Declaration signers had their homes looted and destroyed.
• Declaration signer Richard Stockton, a New Jersey State Supreme Court Justice, returned to his Princeton estate to find that his wife and children were living like refugees after being betrayed by a Tory (an American colonist who supported the British) sympathizer who also revealed Stockton’s location. British troops captured him and threw him in jail, where he almost starved to death.
When he was finally released, he went home to find his estate had been looted and burned. He had been so badly beaten in prison that he died before the war’s end. His surviving family lived the rest of their lives off charity.
• At the Battle of Yorktown on the York River in Virginia, Thomas Nelson, Jr.’s home had been overrun by British Gen. Charles Cornwallis, who had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. Nelson urged Gen. George Washington to open fire on his own home. This was done, and the home was destroyed. Cornwallis later surrendered the British forces at Yorktown in 1781, ending the fighting in the American Revolution.
Nelson, one of the brave and noble 56 signers, died bankrupt.
The 56 Declaration of Independence signers in July 1776 came from various walks of life. Most were considered well-educated for the time. They 56 included lawyers, store merchants, farmers, teachers, one surveyor (Abraham Clark) and even one poor soul who was a printer (Ben Franklin).
All knew without a doubt what would happen if they were caught by the enemy or exposed by a traitor. Still, they signed that wonderful and (thus far) lasting document that, along with the U.S. Constitution, is the basis for the greatest nation on earth.
Let’s read from the National Archives for a moment as we observe and celebrate Independence Day 2020 and remember our nation’s Founding Fathers:
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

All Americans ought to respect, appreciate and try to emulate the efforts of these Founding Fathers.

They run through the woods in a flock like a small stampede, making a lot of noise. I was squirrel hunting before turkey season. I was sitting on a fallen log in full camouflage with a ..22 rifle. I heard a flock approach and saw them coming my way. I waited until they were close, took off my hat with camouflage face net, stood up, waved my arms and shouted at them. Pandemonium. They ran in all directions, some flying, hitting trees, and falling to ground before taking off on foot. I laughed until my sides ached. If it had been turkey season, I’d have taken two of the toms or jakes. In fact I returned to the area in season and took two single toms . Wild turkey is much better than farm raised, just as I prefer wild rabbit to tame rabbit. Wild turkey giblets make the very best gravy.

$4.7 TRILLION unaccountable. Incredible fraud and graft at that scale. That’s about 5 times the defense budget. That’s supervillain scale theft. Every Democrat in congress during the last 4 years, and likely a sizeable numbers of Republicans as well, should be flogged on the Capitol steps, then stoned by the taxpaying public.

That’s enough one dollar bills laid to end to reach to the sun and back 4.78 times. Theft on a cosmic scale.

You really can’t go home again. The memories remain but the scene has changed.

Virginia Beach in the late 60s and early 70s was fun. A boardwalk, a pally where they had rollerskating one night and a dance another night. On the boardwalk were carnival games. I was banned from the rifle arcade shoot for winning too many prizes. South of town along the coast were beaches and especially dunes. We’d go down at night, dig a pit in the sand, gather driftwood and cook hot dogs and brats over the fire, followed by roasting marshmallows and some made s’mores. We drank beer and wine and watched the lights of the ships out on Chesapeake Bay. We’d skinny dip in the surf and make love among the dunes. A few were in committed relationships but most were lovers of convenience. The gals chose their partners for the night. Sort of like Kid Rock’s song “All Summer Long”. There was one girl who favored me but after she went back to college I never saw her again.

Now the dunes are replaced by cookie cutter condos. There had to be a law passed to mandate public access to the beach and now there are bar steel armored tunnels every so many buildings to allow the public to use the beach. Where there once was the boardwalk, arcade and pally, are hotels so tall that you have to look between them to see the beach from the strip.

The memories are still alive in my mind, but the X, Y, and Z are gone. Just the T remains.

When I returned from Vietnam I was without wheels. Six of us pooled our cash and bought a military surplus lot of ten Harley scout bikes still in crates. Took us six months to put them together. 1955 panheads, probably leftover from the Korean War. Rubber was dry rotted as was some of the leather. They were OD green with the white star, etc., markings. Those old beasts had 3 sets of points and suicide shifters with the clutch pedal on the left. Throttle on the right handlebar and spark advance on the left. Took a while to get used to. We had enough spare parts from the excess 4 bikes that we sold them and made our money back plus a little. I wish I’d left it in the original colors, but we had to chop them, put long ape hangers on them and all of the rest. Easy Rider was all the rage. I rode mine from Camp Legune to Norfolk. To say my butt was numb would be an understatement. Those old things sure did shake, rattle and roll. Also, no electric start. Kick it over. And if it backfired at the bottom of the stroke it would catapult you about two feet into the air and your knee hurt. But, put a little gal on the back and ride her around for a bit and the vibrations got good to her. Then you were in like Flynn.

Had to sell it and get a 1968 Malibu when I got married. Harley was good, but it couldn’t cook.

Living on SoCal in the early to late 60s, we ran across several celebs. George Goebel was a blind drunk. Sinatra was a mean drunk, but quite personable and giving when sober. Red Skeleton was a kind man, as was Roy Rogers. Who was just as he appeared on screen. A kind, decent man who, along with Dale, was a straight shooter. Ray Molland was also an alcoholic. Bob Denver could be quite mean in person. Tommy Kirk, Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon were friendly. The Beach Boys were finding their sound. Carlos Santana was nice to me when I accidentally bumped into him one time.

As for WWII, my uncle was a tank crewman from Operation Cobra through the wars end. Was the only survivor of his original tank crew and liberated Buchenwald. It haunted him for the rest of his life. I have never seen “Fury”, but it resembled my uncle’s experiences, from the sound of it.

I lived in Calfornia in the early to mid sixties. Nice climate. Cheap gas, but it was still horribly expensive real estate compared to other states at the time. There were enough reservoirs so that we never had a “do not water lawns” restrictions. No brownouts, no blackouts. There were fires but the shrubbery that causes major fires was controlled and sensible and sustainable forestry practices were the norm. I was young and paid zero attention to politics.

We lived not terribly far from Watts during the race rIots. I had no trouble as I knew the kids from school and their parents thought I was polite. Being biracial was also a boon. I had a foot in both camps and my parents had raised me to not separate people by exterior appearances. I also got along with the Hispanic kids as many of them had at least partial Native American ancestry, although most of it was South and Central American tribes such as Aztec. And since I never shunned Black or Hispanic or the growing (back then) Asian population, I was accepted in pretty much all camps. But since then the left has gone to extremes to create racial hatred. It began in universities then trickled down to elementary schools to the idiocy you see today. Any school administration thatallowed drag reviews in primary education back then would have been ran out of town on a rail.

The left follows the Marxist/Leninist doctrine of first infiltrating schools. California is their glowing success. Massive school systems, immense school budgets. Ripe for conquest. Then fund and incite civil unrest.

In the early sixties California was doing almost everything right. Now they are doing almost everything wrong.

Africa could do all the wonderful things the author says they can – IF Africans weren’t in charge. If Africa was still a colonial continent it could all be worked out. The colonial powers would not tolerate genocides as in Rwanda, Darfur, Central African Republic, etc, etc, in the nations they controlled by proxy. In my opinion Cote de Ivory is making a mistake in removing the French military presence. That is, unless they plan a little ethnic cleansing of their own, in which the French would interfere. If that is their aim, it makes sense.

Africa is a continent of headmen. The strongest gangster or despot rules until replaced/deposed. Even displaced Africans show tribal/gang behavior in the US, UK, France and elsewhere. There are bright spots. Botswana, Morocco, Tunisia and a few others. But they are bright spots only in comparison to other African nations. The best adapting and hardest working Africans I have known are Nigerians. Those I have known emphasized work, education and morals to their children. We have a very few in my rural, mostly White county and all I have met were good people. Neither they nor their children have any sorts of criminal dealings and as far as I know, none of their children are delinquents or abuse drugs or alcohol. Those are what Africa needs, but they emigrated to the US to escape tough situations in their home nation. One family’s kids work for the best family pizzeria in the County, which strange enough is owned by a Polish family.

The Vegas bomber was active duty Spec Ops. Highly decorated. Even Tim McVeigh had a Bronze Star for Valor in battle.

The standards and selection process for Spec Ops is high. He (Vegas bomber) made Master Sergeant. He had seen a lot of combat. But being the best means you get more than your share of work/grief. Eventually it adds up. PTSD is cumulative. It can be sneaky. Each day we lose 44 active duty and veterans to suicide. Actually likely more as several can be called “accidents”. After the various 20th century wars, GIs would self medicate with booze.

When I returned from Vietnam I was called a baby killer and spat upon by a hippy. I had to spend the night in a holding cell until the judge, a veteran, turned me loose for self defense. If I had instead been jailed and discharged less than honorably, no telling what I may have become or done to myself.

This Vegas guy was with 10th SF I believe they said, in Germany. That means he has likely seen “advisory” roles in Ukraine. It also means he has likely seen close combat, been a throat stabber.

Eventually it all adds up. Some of the stuff I have seen and done still keeps me up at night occasionally. I don’t drink much, hardly at all. No drugs. I’m known as either Coke Zero or coffee at the VFW hall. But we do talk, drunk or sober, and talk among equals helps.

Hillary has a better chance than Kamala. But I can see the attraction for Kamala for the lefty bigwigs. She will do absolutely as told. Shove your hand up her butt and make her a puppet. She is mixed race so can claim to be Black. She is nominally a female and the left wants a miority woman in the Oval Office so bad they can taste it. Problem is, she is a terrible campaigner. This time around, when she got the marshmallow-soft question about her differences viz Dopey Joe, she froze like a possum in the headlights. She was roadkill. She HAD to know the question was coming, the media lefties would be sure to tell her campaign manager what questions would be asked. She still flopped. At least she doesn’t terrorize young girls and fall down or walk away with an extended hand pointed toward…nobody.
At least not yet. She has three years to practice, but my belief is they’d rather run AOC than Kamala. Some candidate may rise who is charismatic enough to lead the party and win. A lefty version of Trump – all piss and vinegar. But then, maybe not. Maybe the left has gone plumb loco, as Yosemite Sam would say.
