A Different Kind of Red Shift

A couple of day ago I linked to a post on American Greatness by Angelo Codevilla https://amgreatness.com/2018/04/13/living-with-politics-as-war/ .  I’d like to elaborate a little what I think is interesting about this article.  Vox Day has often said (and I paraphrase)  that the Alt-Right (or Dissident Right or whatever else you call it) will have arrived when the normies have shifted so far to the right that their views can only be distinguished from the Alt-Right by tactics and not by what they believe are the facts on the ground.

Well, I think I’m seeing that happen in real time.  Codevilla is a mainstream academic figure and not an Alt-Right provocateur.  Reading his description of where the country now is and what to do about it is to realize that the idea of going back to a consensus society is effectively dead.  The only question between the normal traditionalists and the Alt-Right is whether we just set up separate shops under the nominally United States or fight a civil war to establish borders between enemy states.  That is remarkable.  It should be disquieting for me but it isn’t.  I still think it will be a bloodless divorce but either way I think we should get on with it.

Codevilla goes through the various arenas where Leftist coercion is the most egregious (schools and colleges, corporate blackmail and de-platforming) and suggests that federal coercion will be less effective than it was formerly and that state legislatures may ignore federal precepts and just go their own way as they have lately on drug enforcement.  Whether he is correct about the federal government giving up on some of its control of local behavior isn’t clear to me but I do think that push back from the right is likely to increase in strength in the future.

So Vox is fond of saying, and I quote, “The Alt-Right is inevitable.”  Depending on how you want to define the Alt-Right we may be seeing proof of his statement.  And if that means the vast majority of non-leftists waking up to the necessity of casting off the oppression of the Left then I am 100% on-board.  Long live the Revolution.  Off with their heads (or at least throw the bums out).

“Schaedenfreude,” “Christian condolence,” “there but for the grace of God,” “I told you so,” “a cautionary tale.” I guess I’m not sure what I think.  Probably a little of each.  But it really doesn’t matter what I think about Kevin and his troubles.  But what I think would be interesting would be an interview by someone farther out on the right side of the spectrum who could explore how he thinks this fits in with his ideas about the just desserts for the dirt people.  I wonder if some intrepid blogger might call him up and find out if his recent experience may have impacted his feeling about the great unwashed.  That would interest me.

Peak Civilization

Hat tip to Vox Day as he links to and quotes a very interesting article about the decline and fall of the Roman Empire by one of its modern descendants, an Italian chemist named Ugo Bardi.  Vox is referencing in his title the science fiction story “A Canticle for Leibowitz” where a future world forms monasteries to preserve knowledge through a new fictional Dark Age as the analogy of us recognizing the coming Dark Ages after ours.  Which also hearkens to Rod Dreher’s book “The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation,” where he compares the present societal decay with the post Roman age that sparked the monastic age.  Bardi in his article goes into the extant texts of Romans from the beginning of the Roman crisis under Marcus Aurelius all the way to end of the Empire in the Fifth Century to argue that the Romans never figured out either what was happening to them or that the Empire could end.

I’ve been fascinated by the spectacle of the Roman Empire since I was a schoolboy hearing about Rome from my Catholic grammar school nuns.  Thinking that we are in an analogous situation is equally fascinating and depressing.  But maybe there is still time to avert such a collapse.  Vox thinks it’s probably too late for the US.  I try to be more optimistic.  If you find the current societal situation at all analogous to that other example of civilizational collapse then you might be interested in looking at both posts.

In Trump We Trust?

Back in 2015 Vox Day identified Donald Trump as the best candidate for president.  He understood how Trump would handle the republican field and how he would connect with the American people.  Between Vox and Scott Adams I read about how a NYC billionaire was going to win Pennsylvania for the republicans for the first time since 1990s.  And they were right.  And eventually everyone found out they were right.  And the right wing rejoiced.

But believing in Donald Trump seems to be difficult for many people.  They expect a traditional politician and he’s anything but that.  And they doubt his conservative bona fides.  And it’s easy to understand.  If you’re a dyed in the wool Second Amendment advocate then the bump stock sacrifice may seem an unforgivable sin.  Or if you are a fiscal conservative the budget deal probably looks like an abomination.

But what you have to remember is that in a war sometimes tactics allow you to survive to fulfill your strategic goals.  President Trump is adept at dealing with bad optics.  He knows when to deflect and when to distract and he knows when a tactical retreat may be needed.  Basically, he knew that the gun control furor required a gesture.  He provided one.  But it’s a small retreat if it deflects the main assault.  And in the long run the Supreme Court (if appointed by someone like Trump) could find the bump stock provision unconstitutional anyway.

Right now, plenty of people on the right are throwing in the towel and declaring the end of the Trump presidency.  I guess I understand their low morale.  They’ve been conditioned by the entire post-Reagan republican experience to expect failure.  But what they don’t understand is they will never have a better chance of actually reversing some of the damage that thirty years of liberals has already done.

So now Vox is naming names for the record ( http://voxday.blogspot.com/2018/03/woe-is-us.html ) and asking that the record be kept.  And once again, I agree with him.  In Trump We Trust.  He may be defeated by the Deep State and drowned trying to drain the swamp.  But at least he’ll go down swinging.  So good for you Vox Day and long live the God Emperor, Donald Trump.  And here’s hoping the faint of heart may soon recover their hope.  Because Trump is our last best hope.

So, I have been out of touch with the world for a week.  Today I tried to catch up a little.  Vox Day had a couple of linked articles.  I’ll paste his article and the linked article in both cases below.  Sounds like Jeff Sessions is working his slow cautious way around to rooting out his enemies in the FBI and Justice Department.  Excellent.  Maybe Mueller is next.

Two Takes on the De-Platforming Threat to Right Wing Businesses by Facebook, Twitter, Google, Etc.

Vox and the ZMan both look at this situation and address different aspects.  Vox says if you don’t build your own platforms you will be destroyed.  Zman sees the current situation as a Public Utility, no different from the electric company discriminating against its customers.

Both good and valid points.  But I think Vox is speaking to right now and Zman is pointing out something for the justice department to look into.  As someone who use Google for various services it brings home the point that having your own support system and not depending on liberals is a good idea.  But a hard one to achieve.

Vox Day’s Alt-Hero Gambit

Vox Day is an intriguing figure.  He is literally putting his money where his mouth is.  His right-wing entrepreneurial activities include (among other things) commercial endeavors in book publishing, video games and now comic books.  In just a few years he has impacted the cloistered and SJW infested world of the Hugo awards and spread the gospel of confronting social justice thugs with his books on SJWs.

His latest venture is the comic book kickstarter that garnered a quarter of a million dollars and has allowed him to hire some of the best talent from the pre-SJW converged past of DC Comics. (Chuck Dixon, the creator of Bane and Frank Fosco, a talented artist who has worked for DC and Marvel).  The effort will involve several separate imprints.  One imprint is called Alt-Hero and is explicitly aimed at combatting the politically correct conventions of modern SJW converged Marvel Comics with in-your-face right-wing heroes.  In addition, there is an imprint called Avalon which will be an entirely original work of Chuck Dixon chronicling the super heroes in his imagined city Avalon.  Dixon has said that Vox has given him free rein to create the Avalon universe according to his own creative vision.  And that is why I am very excited about this venture.

As I have stated previously, I’m in no way, shape or form a comic book enthusiast.  But I recognize how employing talented creators to work without the disabling effects of politically motivated orthodoxies has the potential of attracting the customers who have walked away from comics because of these very problems.  That is exactly what needs to be tried.  If it succeeds even on a limited basis it can act as a template for other areas of the culture that are currently strangulating under leftist control.  Vox’s Castalia House publishing business produces fiction and non-fiction that is unaffected by politically correct ideology.  I’ve enjoyed a number of these books.  And even though I don’t follow comics I did enjoy the Bane character in the third Batman movie (Dark Knight Rising).  He was wonderfully evil and an amazing agent of chaos.  I have to assume that Mr. Dixon has some amusing things to share in this Avalon story line so I intend to try it out when it becomes available.

My larger point is that Vox is demonstrating what needs to be done.  Look at the niches the converged industries provide for a right-wing alternative and give it a try.  The internet is the great leveler of all things entrepreneurial.  If you can imagine a thing that has a market you can market it there.  I’ll add Alt-Hero and Avalon to my list of Right-Wing Businesses.

Vox is an enormously polarizing figure.  But he is a trailblazer for anyone on the right who wants to be part of the solution to the vacuum that is all that’s left of right-wing cultural institutions.  Don’t like left wing news, then blog.  Don’t like the left-wing NYT Best Seller’s List, then patronize right wing publishers and authors.  Don’t want your kids to have to read about or go see a movie about gay Spiderman or transsexual Thor, then maybe buy a few of Vox’s comics for them instead.  To be consistent, I guess I’ll have to put my money where my mouth is.  Comic books?  Who woulda thunk it?

Converged Comics

Vox Day has been called the most hated man in science fiction.  Well now he wants to be the most hated man in comics.  He’s publishing comics with a >$250K kickstarter and he’s pushing a right wing comic called Alt-Hero among other more mainstream fare.  A DC comic creator had an on-line discussion with Vox (see link).  I found it very interesting and includes Vox’s synopsis of his battles with sci-fi, game and comics SJWs.  Pretty interesting.

Vox Day has a very good post that links to a very, very interesting series of articles on Breitbart

Vox is, as most of you probably know, an incredibly polarizing figure on the cultural front.  His public face is intentionally as antagonistic and “triggering” to the lefties as it can be.  He has staked out a position that thrives on conflict with the left.  And he is pointing the direction for a Reconquista of the cultural institutions.  To that end he has begun some commercial ventures that take advantage of the space that the left has produced by restricting what kind of books, video games and comic books are “allowable.”  His Castalia House publications produces mainstream fiction and some non-fiction that could never be published in the current left-wing publishing establishment.  In the last week or so, he has begun a kickstarter campaign to fund comic books that feature some very well-known comic book authors and artists who have been gray-listed by Marvel and DC for not being sufficiently trans-friendly or for actually having fun in their comics.  I read that he has already topped $200,000 in funding so I can only imagine that a beginning is being made toward a commercial product.  Excellent.  Even though I’m not much of a comic book guy, I could see buying a graphic novel or two if the product was interesting enough.  Kudos to Vox for making it happen.  If you are a comicophile (made up word!) then keep an eye out for his Alt★Hero comics.  But even if comic books don’t happen to be your thing, you can only admire someone who is doing something to reverse the scourge of leftist encroachment into all aspects of life.
