Race and the Right

I often read articles by people who describe themselves as the Dissident Right.  What these groups line up around is the idea that the experiment of the United States of America as a multi-ethnic state has been a failure.  The corollary is that the reason for the failure is because the egalitarianism enshrined in the Declaration of Independence with the words, “All men are created equal,” is untrue and therefore a stumbling block to making a society made up of diverse groups workable.  They point out the absurdities and obvious discrimination inherent in the affirmative action laws that interfere in the selection of students and employees in colleges and corporations across America and the harm these practices do both psychologically and practically to all involved.  And they say this problem is unavoidable because of actual differences among different races and groups with respect to intelligence and temperament.  They will point to scientifically produced studies to prove these differences exist and point to the last fifty years of civil rights legislation to prove that nothing will ever alter the government’s approach to race relations.  In other words, the government will always consider differences in achievement and social outcome between the races as proof that racial discrimination is being committed.

I believe that some of what they say is probably true.  There are differences between people.  And intelligence is an inherited characteristic in the same way that all our other physical characteristics are inherited from our parents.  And some groups probably are better at various things depending on how their ancestors spent their time.  Farmers, hunters, merchants, sailors, soldiers, priests, and craftsman are successful for different skill sets and physical characteristics.  If a civilization has a very long history, running into millennia of a profession that specializes in doing astronomical calculations such as the Chinese or the Babylonians it might not be surprising to find their descendants have been selected for brains that are adept at mathematical calculation.  Or if your people have been traders for thousands of years such as many in the middle east it might not be surprising to find that they have skills that make them comfortable working in finance and commerce.  Let’s grant all these things.  But let’s also remember that every group is itself a normal distribution for any of these traits.  There is always a bell curve with the majority of individuals somewhere in the middle of the curve but with some individuals higher and lower than the middle.  So even within any group that is found to excel at some characteristic like IQ, that group will have some more intelligent individuals and some less.  And no one seems to be upset that there are more and less successful individuals within an ethnic or racial group that is not believed to be victims of discrimination.  If all the white Anglo-Saxon descendants in Massachusetts were catalogued, we would find some that were incredibly wealthy and then we would find some that are abysmally poor.  Why do we not assume that discrimination is at work?  The obvious reason is that there is no racial motive at work.  So, this would lead us to the conclusion that differences in the talents and characteristics of people lead to differences in their level of success.  We do not have to suspect that systemic discrimination is the cause.

Bringing this back to the egalitarian statement, “All men are created equal,” it seems evident to me that the Founding Fathers didn’t mean that people were identical in their capabilities but instead that all men were equal under the law.  There were no nobles who had priority over the rights of the commoners.  There was one law for all.  But I can’t see how that should be interpreted as meaning that everyone is forced to have exactly the same house, car, family size and television set.  Now granted the government seems to be saying that if there are disparities between the prosperity of different ethnic and racial groups then the only explanation is racism.  But I see changing the government’s minds and policies as the primary object of the Right-Wing project.

But let me play devil’s advocate.  My neighbors in the Dissident Right would say that the gap for some groups is so large that they could not integrate into the society that contains many higher functioning individuals because their skills would not be adequate.  I do not think that is true.  There are jobs in a country like ours that accommodate all levels of skill and experience.  That is proved by the never-ending influx of unskilled illegal immigrants who find occupation by the millions.

No, I think the real problem is we have to force the government to acknowledge that we’re not harming the people they claim we are.  In fact, we have to force the government to admit that welfare and affirmative action are the problems.  That and the phony claims by the Left that blacks are being systematically oppressed.  These lies have poisoned race relations in America for more than a generation past when any actual discrimination existed.

As far as the problems with police, that is a reflection of the lawlessness that reigns in these neighborhoods.  Pretending that it is the police that are the problem is a ridiculous lie.  Police hyperactivity occurs whenever criminality is rampant.  This same situation occurred in the European ghettos of the early twentieth century in all the big cities.  Irish, Italian and even Jewish gangs were constantly battling the police and the kids in the neighborhood would be recruited by the gangs and would then be fair game for the police.

Of course, at the present time, this situation has festered to the point that millions live in poverty, crime and perpetual unemployment.  To break out of this crisis the government should focus its efforts on incentivizing industries that can utilize low skill employees to set up shop in these devastated areas and shift as many of these people from welfare to work as quickly as possible.

So that in a nutshell is how I see the racial problem in the United States.  I differ from the Dissident Right in that I don’t think the problem is unsolvable.  The problem is to end the failed practice of blaming white people for disparities in racial prosperity and instead concentrate on stimulating job creation for low skill employees to break the cycle of perpetual unemployment and dysfunction.

But one thing that should be said in defense of the Dissident Right.  They were first to recognize that the Left’s use of identity politics rendered the Establishment Right perpetually on the defensive and hopelessly incapable of defeating the never-ending series of progressive demands.  And their recommendation that white Americans begin demanding their rights is absolutely correct.  In a world of identity politics, the only way to avoid abuse is to claim your own identity and stand up for your rights.

20AUG2020 – OCF Update

First off, apologies on that notification this afternoon.  There was no post.  Something odd must have happened with the software or maybe I’ve got a gremlin.  Hopefully it’s a one off.

Unfortunately the day job is really starting to interfere with OCF.  So I may have to quit the day job.  But bear with me.  Serving two masters (and a mistress if you count Camera Girl’s endless demands) is an impossibility according to the good book.  But that’s where I am right now.  And that is why the paucity of posting.  So I’m checking with the people who count up my pennies to see if retirement is in my immediate future.  If it is then all good things will be possible.  I’ve opened up a Kindle Direct Publishing account and might try my hand at some fiction writing.

Camera Girl is of course worried about her lavish life style evaporating, her mountain gorilla rescue colony on her private Hawaiian island, the Mozart cloning effort going on in Bora Bora, her five alarm chili cooking lessons.  I told her to cancel the chili lessons.

But I have many skills.  Looking through the want ads I saw an interesting opportunity for a rodeo clown.  That’s similar to my present job but with much more dignity and a better class of people.  After all, I don’t think the rodeo has started to kneel during the anthem or accused their employees of white privilege.

I feel a little guilty because I’ve skipped the Dem convention.  In my defense I have a weak stomach and probably would be ill if I watched that much stupidity, but from what I’ve heard it sounds pretty unwatchable.

I read an article by, I guess you’d call him an entrepreneur, living in NYC.  His thesis is that this time the city won’t be coming back.  His biggest reason is that there’s no longer a good reason to live in New York.  Culturally, all the advantages have been cancelled out.  The good restaurants, the theater, the stores are all gone and won’t be coming back, not soon anyway and only in a much more degraded fashion.  Commercially, the office buildings will never fill up again now that businesses have discovered that remote working is a viable and much cheaper option for almost everything except manufacturing.  Plus the retail stores have been looted and burned out of existence and have no hope of customers showing up for months to come.  And finally, the residents who can leave, have.  The loss of all the above plus the rampant crime and fear that it entails has made New York a decidedly unappealing locale for the upper classes.  And when they leave that will change the complexion of life in New York in a decisive way.

When I left New York thirty three years ago I did so because it had become a bad place to raise kids for anyone who wasn’t rich.  Now, unless you have a security fence like the one around the T Rex pen in Jurassic Park and a private helipad, even the rich wouldn’t want to live there.  Well, I’ve already made my peace with being a stranger in a strange land.  Any place that would enthusiastically re-elect Bill de Blasio deserves everything it gets and more.  I just feel bad for the small business owners and working class people.  But it will be a permanent object lesson for all of them about living in a place where marxists are in charge.

The weather has taken on a late summer feel.  Which is still plenty warm but definitely means that fall will be sneaking up on us before we know it.  It also means soon I’ll run out of flowers, plants and bugs to take pictures of.

And, of course, this going to be an election from hell.  We can expect the Democrats to pull out all the stops and break every law in the book to try and drag Creepy Uncle Joe over the finish line.  We’ll all need strong stomachs by the time this thing is over.

So stay tuned.

The Ministries of Truth and Love in Corporate America

In 1984, George Orwell’s overly optimistic vision of what the future totalitarian progressive state would be, he calls the government agency in charge of propaganda, the Ministry of Truth and the Ministry of Love was the agency whose job it was to terrorize and punish the citizens into believing that truth.  In the real world, where things are much worse, instead of just the government, each corporation has now combined those functions into the Human Resources department.  They provide you with the loving truth and you had better pay attention when they do.

Last week on one of my posts someone commented his reply to his employer’s corporate “conversation” about anti-black racism in America. To say he gave them the straight dope would be an understatement.  He gave them both barrels.  And he did this without anonymity.  That’s amazingly brave.  Recently Cisco had a similar townhall meeting to air opinions about the same topic and when some employees said things like “All Lives Matter Not Just Black Lives Matter” they were promptly fired.  LinkedIn had a similar meeting but allowed anonymity and after they received similar answers, they promised to never allow anonymous replies again.  Here’s MSN’s article describing these two events.  Being Microsoft, the article takes the view that the employees got what they deserved.

Now normally I prefer not to quote people I do not respect but for once I think I’ll use Barack Obama’s favorite phrase.  Let’s look at this as a “teachable moment.”

What do we see here?  American corporations pretending to encourage open discussion of a divisive position on race relations that the company has taken and when the employees provide nuanced reasonable opinions that oppose the company’s position, they are declared racists and fired.

What should we learn from this?  First of all, if an American company says they want your opinion, really what they are telling you is what your opinion must be.  Namely, the same opinion as theirs.  Period.  In fact, what they’re expecting you to do is virtue signal just how much more you believe in something than even the company does.  If the company says it’s going to donate a half percent of profits to BLM you should declare that you’re going to donate a full percent or even more of your paycheck to BLM.  If you want to keep working at the company the least you are allowed to do is just stay silent about your true opinion.  And depending on how “woke” the company is, even that may get you fired.

Secondly, corporate America has knuckled under either willingly or unwillingly to the progressive agenda, lock, stock and barrel.  Unless you happen to be a protected class, you are at best a second-class citizen and most likely someone they would rather see leave.

And finally, the way this should get fixed is by a Justice Department investigation that prosecutes one of these companies for civil rights violations at a monetary level that puts the fear of God in every board room in the country.  And the only way that happens is if the President, the DOJ and the Supreme Court are all on our side and want us to be free citizens again.  Whether that is likely to happen sooner or later is hard to say.

But I had a funny idea, call it a thought experiment.  Since the BLM/Antifa model of direct action is apparently perfectly acceptable to the governments of the various states involved would it be equally okay if a mostly peaceful protest showed up in Mountain View, California and burned Google’s headquarters to the ground.  Or maybe CNN or The New York Times or even Harvard University.  Nothing violent or wrong just a mostly peaceful protest where people took direct action to let the country at large know that they were unhappy.  Now, my guess is that the executive office of every big corporation in America would have a very long meeting about that occurrence but I also guess there wouldn’t be any Human Resources townhall about it.  I’ll bet they won’t state their opinion at all.  But they may stop telling Americans what they have to believe in order to work at their company.  Just a thought.

08AUG2020 – OCF Update

Apologies for my lack of content.  My power and data lines have been down since Tuesday afternoon and just this minute the internet came back on line.  The power is still out but the generator has another day or two of propane to run on so life is good.

I’ll try to catch up but bear with some spotty content until I catch up with what has happened in my absence.  Unless the giant ants have already taken over the world in which case I salute our insect overlords and look forward to pointing out Democrats for them to devour.

05AUG2020 OCF Update – Marooned in the Dead Zone

Tropical Storm “Whatever the Hell it Was Called” blew through here yesterday and I’ve been without power, phone, cable and internet for about thirty hours.  One point of clarification, Camera Girl and I only have a land line.  I am the last adult male in North America without any sort of cellular phone.  Because of this I haven’t seen news, read a blog or even been able to get on OCS since early afternoon on Tuesday.  I took a car ride to visit family today and had to make four detours to get through all the downed power lines in my heavily wooded part of the country.  But my visit was practical.  I wanted to make sure they had running water in the house and were able to keep their refrigerated food cold.  I didn’t ask them whether the country was still called America or whether the White House had been repainted black to show sensitivity for hurt feelings.  I wasn’t even sure exactly how many people in the Northeast were without power.  I knew there were a lot locally but how far it extended was completely unknown to me.

It’s kind of a weird feeling.  I couldn’t even get on line to do my day job.  Luckily the dvd player doesn’t require the internet and so I was able to watch the next episode of Star Trek tonight.  It’s the one where Kirk, Spock, Scotty and McCoy go down to a planet and then start aging 30 years per day and Spock convenes a competency hearing and has Kirk declared too senile to captain the Enterprise.  It’s wonderful.  I’ll write it up soon but what struck me was that I was so grateful for a diversion from the quiet.  Well, not exactly quiet.  If the air conditioner is off, I can hear the generator cranking away.  It’s about as loud as a lawn tractor but hour after hour it really begins to get annoying as a background sound.  And it’s not exactly cabin fever.  After all the car still runs.  I mean, it’s not as if I’m going all Jack Torrance or anything but if Camera Girl starts pulling a Shelley Duvall act around here it won’t be good.  In a lot of ways, I’ve always been the caretaker here and nobody better forget it.

Well anyway, I’ve been thinking about all the bizarre things that have happened in the last six months and I’ve decided we have officially entered into a permanent state of madness.  Basically nothing is unthinkable and the odds of the whole human race descending into an irrevocable death spiral seems just as likely as not.  And at this point I think I might be willing to take my chances in the new setup.  With enough ammunition and gasoline, I could see myself as the next Lord Humungous.  I’ve always wanted to be able to threaten to unleash my dogs of war.  The only thing is I’ll have to lose some weight. Humungous was pretty fit.

So that’s where we are.  Forced to huddle in our homes afraid to go to the grocery store without a mask because the thought police will turn me in.  Working from home because our corporate masters are afraid of being sued for killing us with COVID and now we don’t have electricity, running water, refrigeration or access to mass communication.  At this rate pretty soon we’ll be envying the peasants during the black plague because at least they had that guy with the cart collecting the dead.  We’ll probably be forced to stockpile our dead until someone figures out a safe way for the garbagemen to collect them.

Update: 6AUG2020 I travelled to a wifi area to post this.  I’m not sure when my access will be restored so bear with my sparse commenting for the next day or so.

27JUL2020 – OCF Update

Over the weekend I got in touch with some friends of mine that I knew had expertise that I was interested in having showcased on the site.  One fellow is a gun guy and by this I mean that he is both a gun enthusiast and also a staunch Second Amendment partisan.  I told him I’m interested in articles on both topics.  I think there’s broad interest for these kind of articles.  So hopefully he’ll have the time to contribute a post or two on these subjects.

The other guy, among many other interests, is a student of the theory of technological innovation.  He’s interested in what kinds of corporate enterprises produce value like replacing a typewriter with a word processor and what kinds merely suck the life out of an industry like when Hollywood rolls out “Star Wars MCMXXXIX – The Search for Transgender Ewok Wokeness.”  He has very definite opinions and some of them seem counter intuitive to me but I find this stuff useful when I try to imagine how I would want to see the US government incentivize the re-industrialization  of America.

So these two guys will write the stuff they know about and since these aren’t my strong suits it will add more breadth to the site.

And by the same token if any of you folks out there are interested in contributing to the site either on a one off basis or more regularly then just let me know either in a comment or by e-mail to orionscoldfire(at)charter(dot)net and I’d love to hear your ideas and what you want to share.

As we head for August and inch closer to the fall campaign season we will all be bombarded with propaganda by both sides.  But I expect the Dems to reach ludicrous levels of untruth.  I fully expect to see a commercial claiming that President Trump is a space alien and that he eats puppies for breakfast.  I fully intend to intend to revel in their mendacity and am toying with the idea of having “Stupid Democrat Ad of the Week” or something like that.  But what is more important, I’m hoping to see the President’s campaign focus on the rioting and associated chaos and relentlessly paint the Democrats and Joe Biden with the guilt for what they have tolerated and even sponsored.  It seems to me that hammering that home should be all that is needed to give the sane fraction of the voting public what it needs to disqualify the Dems from running this country.  Whether that sane fraction has the votes or not to put us over the top is the question of the hour.

So stay tuned.  There should be lots of good stuff, political and cultural, coming down the pike.

21JUL2020 – OCF Update

I saw Vox Day had a link to an article and an excerpt about Red Bull firing their North American Chief Executive and Chief Marketing Officer because they were pushing a BLM diversity and inclusion racket at the company.  Apparently Red Bull is run by a billionaire CEO Dietrich Mateschitz in Austria and he’s old school.  He even likes Donald Trump.  Apparently these two were leading a social justice crusade.  They leaked a letter to the press where 300 employees complained about Red Bull’s lack of wokeness.  I’m guessing those 300 whiners may be joining the ranks of the unemployed woke very soon.  I’m not the kind to drink energy drinks but I’ll have to see how to give a boost to a company that has its head screwed on right like they do.

I’ve started reading Stanislaus Lem’s “Cyberiad.”  War Pig had mentioned it and I remember I was interested in reading some more of his stuff way back when.  It’s off-beat and very humorous and that’s something you don’t get in sf&f very often so I’m thinking this will be good.

I’m looking for someone who has a background in guns to write some articles on classic and state of the art handguns.  I’ve always thought those kind of articles will be popular and useful for the readers here.  If anyone is interested leave a comment or e-mail.

I’ll put up a review of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”  It’s not my usual movie but it was recommended and it has some interesting points.  But it is a Quentin Tarantino film and he is a strange dude.

I’ve gotten some more of Olivier’s Shakespeare movies.  I’ll throw those on the pile and watch them soon.  I’m thinking I need to do a series on classic westerns.  I should make a point of buying the dvds before the studios decide to destroy them out of woke spite.

And finally I made a point of buying a Columbus biography written before the revisionists blackened his name.  It should be just the thing for ammunition against the brainless when they screech against him.

11JUL2020 – OCF Update

Sorry for the posting drought but it couldn’t be helped.  I have off for the next week and had to pay the piper for it.  In other words the day job.  In addition, nothing grabbed my attention enough that I had to write.  The waking world has taken on a strange dream-like or nightmarish quality that disorients the chronicler.  What formerly would have been astounding events has now become mundane.  More riots?  Sure.  Statues toppled?  Check.  Cities burned?  Are there still any un-burned?  Supreme Court outrages?  Whatever.

I just finished Spellbound, the second volume in Larry Correia’s Grimnoir series.  I’ll write up the review but right upfront I’ll say it’s very good.  I’ve always liked his Monster Hunter books but this historical urban fantasy is even better.  I’ll rave about it soon in a post but now I’ve got to get the third volume on order to see how it turns out.

Believe it or not, I haven’t done my taxes yet.  Actually this is my signature move.  I always wait until the deadline. It’s a family tradition.  But this year my laziness has actually driven me to take advantage of one of the tax services to prepare my forms.  I can only imagine how painful this will be.  But they say suffering is good for the soul.

A week off in July is the high point of my New England year.  It is the least likely place in the calendar for snow and full of the things that are most likely to make me smile.  There are lightning bugs (or fireflies if you like), fireworks, watermelon, barbecue, ninety degree days, dragonflies, butterflies even a swimming pool if I want.  I might even find a preying mantis in my garden.  I can spend hours trying to get a good shot of a hummingbird or a fox or a tiny golden bee.  I can watch favorite old movies way into the night and make believe I’m a kid again.

So forgive me if I’m a little delinquent here at the site.  I’m sure to have some good stuff this week.

Me and My Shadow

Tuning In and Tuning Out – Part I

During a recent discussion I was having with a friend, I was told to stop worrying about the culture wars because, “It’s not ideological, it’s just the globalists pitting people against each other to maximize their profits.”  I couldn’t convince my friend that this wasn’t very comforting.  Knowing that the Elite that offshores our jobs and the rabid Leftists who want to destroy everything normal and wholesome in our live aren’t really ideological allies is cold comfort because despite their differences they have managed between them to destroy the United States of America.

But one good comes from the realization that the old America is gone.  You no longer have to try to fix the country.  There are just two things you have to do.  You have to look for the good things that are out there and tune into them and strengthen them.  And you have to tune out the bad things and insulate yourself from them and do whatever you can to weaken them.

Easier said than done.  Try if you can, to figure out how to do those two things.  Think of examples from your daily life.  For instance, during the recent riots my employer decided to have managers engage their direct reports about injustice toward blacks in America.  So, I’m listening over the computer to a Canadian telling us that he hadn’t heard of “Juneteenth” before.  And then he wanted to know if we had any thoughts.  Well, what I wanted to do was tell him that since the rioters had looted and burned down the downtown areas of numerous American cities, I no longer cared about their centuries-old tribulations.  But that would have been unwise if I wanted to keep getting a paycheck from them.  What I did do was tune this nonsense out.  I actually spent the time while this sermonizing was going on checking my e-mail and replying to some comments on this site.  And because of that I felt better.

And as far as tuning in, I spent time last week reading a couple of authors from our side of the political spectrum.  Larry Correia, the author of the Grimnoir series was the leader of the revolt of science fiction authors against the social justice school of science fiction.  He led the Sad Puppies movement that revealed the Hugo Awards as the social justice fraud that it really is.  And he writes fantasy stories that are 100% free of political correctness and social justice whining.  And Jason Anspach and Nick Cole’s Galaxy’s Edge series is a military science fiction breath of fresh air in a world of Star Wars gender confused losers.  Enjoying those books and spreading the word on them is my way of tuning in to a part of the world that I want to strengthen.  And because of that I felt better.

In that way, I can endure the endless betrayals of John Roberts and the other traitors to America that daily sully the news with their crimes.  I can endure the cowards on the supposed right and the thugs and lunatics on the Left and the corporatist parasites who work to sell off what is left of the nation.  I concentrate on what is good and do my small part to pass the word along.  And I work to help the people in my locale who are on my side.  I first off, help my family and my friends.  Then I work outward to my acquaintances.  And that can be fertile ground.  I’ve found like minded people at work where I never expected it.  It can open up your circle of friends dramatically.  Making new links and building new friendships is exciting and makes life better.

Your life is very valuable.  Your happiness is also valuable.  When the Leftists commit their atrocities, your misery is part of their victory.  Your unhappiness weakens you and it weakens our side collectively.  And, conversely, when you are happy it strengthens our side.  That’s part of the logic of this shutdown.  The unhappiness and loneliness it breeds is demoralizing.  But if you can tune out the psyops propaganda then they lose and we win.

So, come on.  Strike a blow for our side.  Call a friend and set up a party or a poker game.  Or just get in touch with an old friend you haven’t spoken to in an age and say hi.  Send a good book or a link to a good article (maybe this one) to someone who is on our side of the fence.  Contribute to President Trump’s re-election campaign.

And tune out the nonsense from the other side.  Ignore the doom and gloom.  Stop worrying about the elections.  Stop worrying about the COVID stuff.  Stop worrying about the House and the Senate and the Supreme Court.  None of those things are helped by you worrying.  Sure, you can convince people on our side to vote and you can make sure you do too.  But you aren’t going to turn any tides by yourself so stop worrying.

There, don’t you feel a little better already?  I do because writing this is my way of tuning in.

All Outrage and No Fun Makes photog A Dull Boy

In the immortal notes and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin:

“Summertime, an’ the livin’ is easy

Fish are jumpin’ an’ the cotton is high.

Oh, yo’ daddy’s rich and yo’ ma is good-lookin’

So hush, little baby, don’ you cry.”

While statues of Lincoln freeing the slaves are being pulled from their pedestals maybe cotton fields aren’t the acceptable subject of song, especially with all that yo’ and mammy going on in the lyrics.  But here at Orion’s Cold Fire we appropriate culture with a rakish grin and a tip of the cap.

Anyway, we are bearing down on July and anyone who has been hanging around here for more than a year knows that July is my sacred time.  I live to have a week or two off during the hottest, sunniest, least wintery time of the year.  It must be my Mediterranean heritage.  Relaxing in a country environment during this time of the year with no work responsibilities is as close to heaven as I am ever likely to get either before or after death (being an irredeemable sinner).

Because of the COVID hoax I will be deprived of the annual pleasure of seeing all of my relatives this summer which is tragic.  But I refuse to let this insanity cancel this most joyful time of the year and I intend to fulfill all my usual rituals and revel in all the things I enjoy.  I intend to grill up a barbecue and eat watermelon and corn on the cob, enjoy potato salad and lemonade.  I’ll watch old movies and listen to music that evokes memories of the best of times.  I will photograph birds and bugs and flowers and I will sleep in a hammock under a tree and listen to the music of the wood thrush and the song sparrow (or at least a blue jay and a mourning dove).  And for a few days I will ignore BLM and antifa and Nancy Pelosi and even my soulless boss.

But what I will not ignore is OCF and the good folks who come here to see what crazy things I’m talking about next.  I will have things to say and reviews of things I like.  I will share photos and anything else I think might be interesting.  Things may slow down a little but there won’t be a gap.  What hopefully will be missing is outrage.  At this time of the rolling year I think it is more than desirable to forsake the doom and gloom that is so all encompassing in our daily lives and look for the good and happy and fun.  I will seek out the traditional sources of wholesome happiness and sling them at you folks with both hands.  I will accentuate the positive.  I will be jolly if it kills me.

And so, this is my intention.  It is possible that some new atrocity will preclude all this.  If the Jacobeans come marauding down the highway and torch the Compound then most probably my plan for revelry will evaporate.  Bad weather could throw a damper on my plans or illness could ruin it.  But I wish everyone out there a very happy high summer, especially you folks in the northern latitudes.  This is the time we look forward to during all those short snowy days and long frigid nights of winter.

Here Comes the Sun
