While I’m doing aircraft I’ll up the picture count because I have so blasted many of them and we’d still be posting aircraft during the 2028 election cycle. (Slight exaggeration there.)

B25 Gunship: This was a WWII variant of the B25 when someone asked the question of “just how many 50 Cal machine guns can we hang on a B25 and have it still fly?” The answer was “Quite a few”. I’m pretty sure this variant was used exclusively in the Pacific Theater.

40MM Borfors: Another view of this famous weapon.

130 Gunship Crewman: Just lounging around as the civilians swarm around your aircraft.

Armament on a C130 Gunship: This shot was taken on Hurlburt Field, the operational headquarters of most of the Special Forces and their aircraft support. Three mini-guns is unusual, usually there is one 25mm. This aircraft also had a 105 and a 40mm outside this view.

B17 Bombardier: Bombardier station for a WWII B17 bomber. The Germans shot these things down by the many 1,000’s during the war, each one representing the loss of 9 crewmen.Through 1943 and 1944, the probability of making it through a 25 mission tour was essentially zero. Both the German fighter and flack defence was viciously effective. Same story for the American B24’s and the various British bomber crews.

B17 Cockpit: Pilot on the left and CO pilot on the right. One of the tactics the German fighters used to great success was to come at the bombers from the front, avoiding the bristling 50 cal MG’s. Can you imagine being locked in formation, unable to maneuver, while a heavy cannon armed FW 190 comes dead at you guns blazing?

B17 Bomber: This shot was taken at the Air Force Museum at Eglin AFB.

B25 Bomber: This is a side view of the same plane I posted earlier. Taken at NAS Pensacola.

October Viewing – 1

I was thinking of watching the Vance/Walz debate.  But I just didn’t feel like it.  Around ten o’clock I was browsing my X timeline and noticed that several of the people I follow were saying that Vance was doing serious damage to Walz.  But I just couldn’t be bothered.  I figure by tomorrow if he really did serious damage to Walz there would be all kinds of highlights to watch and if there weren’t I would have saved myself a lot of annoyance.  Instead, I decided to celebrate October by watching some Universal Horror.  I watched Dracula.

Now. I’ve seen that movie dozens of times.  I know it inside and out.  But what I did was to try to watch it as if for the first time.  I divorced it from the familiarity that renders it just a collection stereotypes and associated memories and tried to look at the images and the dialog to see how they strike me as cinema.

And it’s a funny thing.  It occurred to me that an audience that was used to cowboy movies and had only in the last year or so begun watching talking pictures might have been very excited by the visuals and the scenes portrayed.  The opening scene of Renfield travelling by horse drawn carriage into the Carpathian Mountains was very atmospheric.  The backdrops of the mountains were very well done.  And Castle Dracula was equally well done.

Renfield’s interview with Dracula was just the right combination of comedy and menace.  I will confess that I never found Bela Lugosi menacing enough to make his Dracula compelling but Van Helsing’s scientific vampire hunter is highly entertaining.  When he confronts Dracula with the mirror and later during his conversation with the vampire where he promises to find Dracula’s coffin and drive a stake through his heart, we are witnessing the central tension of the movie.  Everyone else is blind to how their neighbor from Transylvania is the nexus for all of the death and inexplicable occurrences.  But once Van Helsing shows up with his wolfbane and crucifixes even Renfield starts talking sense.

And that brings me to another aspect of the movie.  The humor between Renfield and the psychiatric orderly Martin is hammy and over the top but provides a very enjoyable counterpoint to the wildly unrealistic dramatic story.  The working-class manners and behavior of Martin and the rest of the staff contrasts to the more aristocratic manners and speech of the Sewards and their friends.  Even the madman Renfield is humanized in his dealings with Martin who affectionately calls Renfield “old fly-eater” and seems genuinely friendly to this vampire-in-training.

The final climax of Van Helsing and Harker storming Carfax Abbey and finishing off Dracula with the promised stake through the heart is a little underwhelming but I think that at the time and at first view Dracula must have been an exciting motion picture that thrilled audiences, especially young women who would have personalized the erotic danger that Dracula was meant to imply for them.

Now of course, for us, after nearly a century of time in which the movie has accreted mostly comical connections to everything from breakfast cereals to Sesame Street characters it’s hard to imagine real fear associated with this film.  But looked at as a piece of art it can definitely be enjoyed for what it is.  There is still blood left in the movie.  And as Bela reminds us, “The blood is the life.”

Update:

War Pig commented:

To the contrary, since I first saw it as a child, Lugosi was the perfect Dracula. While Christopher Lee was more intimidating, Lugosi was the epitome of the Count. Suave, debonaire, charming, intelligent, faultless evening dress which he wore with dignity and aplomb. So smooth and with the east European accent. Yet he was also the very image of evil when he went for the throat.

Mom and my sister sat and watched it with rapt attention. The vampire is, of course, the ultimate Casanova, as well.

The Last Gasp

A beautiful early autumn day.  The sky is blue, the clouds are light and the air is crisp.  The last few butterflies rest on the ground on top of dry leaves that are strewn everywhere.  They lie in the sun until they have enough heat to fly.

But they merely bide their time until they exit this world very soon.  A few dragonflies still make their sentry rounds along the perimeter searching for whatever flying insect life remains.

I see honey bees on the golden rod and a few hover flies here and there.  The wolfbane is ready to burst open any day.

The trees are shedding their leaves everywhere you look.  Sometimes they stream down in showers and sometimes one by one.  While I was taking a few photos, I felt them dropping on my head and shoulders.

November Leaves

A beautiful day, a golden day that very soon will be just a memory as October marches toward Halloween and the days shorten toward winter.  And these are a reminder that it’s time to finish all the yard chores before the cold weather sets in.  All the furniture, hoses, tools, and gardening equipment need to be gathered and stored away.  Fences needed to be strengthened, holes filled and damage repaired all along the length of the buildings.

Luckily for me Camera Girl has provided a list of all my chores!  Lucky me.

But this has been a good year for setting things right.  Major repairs were successfully completed in time for winter and just a few finishing strokes are needed to return everything to normal.  The next forty days will be very busy with annoying responsibilities that will be … very annoying.  But once that is over, I will be in a much better place schedule wise and every otherwise.  And coincidentally we will all be past the milestone of Election Day.  All of the excitement and uncertainty will be over once and for all.  I can stop thinking about all this political claptrap once and for all.  This election is a complete acid test.  If a Kamala Harris can be installed in the White House under the circumstances that have prevailed for the last four years, then there is absolutely no reason to think that my point of view has any relation to who is made president.

At that point I will order my life according to the laws of cause and effect as they are demonstrated not by what is said but by what is done.  I will take it as my responsibility to protect my family as best I can from the predatory elements that have been unleashed by the people in charge and teach them to read the signs in order to do the same for their families.  I will look for like minded people to gather with and enjoy the good things that this world provides.  And I will look for any leaders who might appear who show they can handle themselves and provide a refuge for those who aren’t deluded by the toxic nonsense that the regime teaches to the weak minded and the gullible.

So here we are.  October will come and go quickly.  And after that unpleasantness in early November the holidays will be upon us.  I’m looking forward to gathering with friends and family and go over all the milestones that have happened this year.  And plan for next year’s.  I’m looking forward to eating too much of the rich food that Camera Girl is famous for.  And spending hours shooting the breeze with family that I don’t see often enough.  And we’ll perform all the typical rituals and congratulate each other for surviving another year.

Yes, it was a beautiful day and a good day to get things done.
