A Gang of Turkeys

Camera Girl with her hawk eye spotted a group of turkeys walking through the forest.  So, I took my trusty Sony A7 IV and my Minolta 200mm f/4 macro lens with Sony LA-EA5 adapter and flashed off fifty shots of the uncouth looking modern dinosaurs.  I’ll work on them later but here’s a representative jpg.

I guessing the turkeys are looking for food before the big freeze down happens tomorrow.  We’ll be dropping thirty degrees down into negative single digits tomorrow night.  This should be a good test of the supposedly repaired heating system we live with.  A really annoying aspect of the “repair” is that the suction fan has a vibration that is very audible in the living room.  I’ll have to become an acoustical engineer and figure out where some fireproof acoustical insulation will solve that problem.  Oh, the joys of owning a very unorthodox house.

I looked up the name for a group of turkeys.  It’s called either a gang or a rafter.  A rafter sounds like an architectural term whereas gang captures some of the disreputable and disorganized facets of the behavior of a bunch of dopey birds.  And that immediately got me thinking of the Republican lawmakers.  They’re a gang of fat, stupid and disorganized bird-brained followers who couldn’t shoot fish in a barrel.  I think of them because things are going so horribly for the Democrats and Biden that it must be about time for those losers that are supposedly on our side of the fence to help the Democrats out by missing some opportunity to kick them while they’re down.  Already that dope Cruz was yapping about how the January 6th farce was a terrorist attack.  I used to like him but what is wrong with him if he says something stupid like that.  It’s the unforced errors that drive me crazy with these “friends” of ours.

The biggest surprise of 2021 was Joe Manchin stabbing the Dems in the back.  It was wholly unforeseen and miraculously potent.  Combined with the COVID revolt, it has poleaxed Biden’s presidency good and proper.  But I’m waiting for our Manchin.  I’m assuming it will be Romney.  He’s a sniveling coward who loves to play the principled man of honor when he knows it will get him the spot light.  But with the disarray on the left maybe we’ll be spared until the midterms when with any luck they’ll lose the Senate along with the House.

I wonder how long it will take the Supreme Court to make up their minds about the vaccine mandates.  I confess I’m pretty excited about a win there.  That also means I’ll be very disappointed if they fink on us and throw in with the Fauci fascists.  But things seem to be going our way on this in the public opinion field.  People are waking up to the fact that these vaccines are at best useless and at worst a very dangerous thing to do to young and healthy people.  Anyone with children and grandchildren should be paying close attention to the information on both efficacy and safety.  These drugs would never have been approved on a normal testing basis by the FDA.

So, stay warm this week.  The Polar Express will be coming through and providing a good excuse to stay warm and watch some old movies or read a good book.  I’ve been managing to put the time to good use writing.  I produced about five thousand words of prose in the last two or three days.  Not bad.  Of course, I’ve still got seventy or eighty thousand words to go.  But Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Watch out for those turkeys, winged or otherwise.

Saturday Snow Cleanup and Reality Begins to Seep Through

Well today’s outdoor work took a lot longer than I expected.  That’s what I get for trying to do a good job.  But it was a beautiful, cold, sunny winter day and I got plenty of fresh air.  When I checked the news, Dementia Joe’s approval numbers had hit another all-time low.  Another medical expert is calling out Fauci and the rest of the health establishment about COVID lies.  And there are indications that the Supreme Court is going to find the OSHA vaccine mandate unconstitutional.  So, it seems like reality is starting to sink in all over the place.

And I can confirm that even in a little town like mine people are starting to take notice that getting vaccinated can be a dangerous thing.  Someone I know well, someone who is a staunch believer in boosters and tests and masks, told me that a sixteen-year-old girl in town died of heart failure.  No one is going to think that’s a normal thing.  That’s going to scare a lot of parents.  People are starting to reconsider the information they’ve been fed.

You know things have been crazy now for so long I haven’t even considered that maybe a lot of people who have been part of the problem might change their minds about the madness they’ve backed.  Could enough of the suburban women come around to the idea that they’ve been on the wrong side?  I guess we’ll know soon enough.

On the home front, Princess Sack of Potatoes has been home sick for a week with COVID but luckily, it’s omicron so she’s already feeling better and getting mighty uppity.  Both her mom and dad have the bug too so now there’s a serious power imbalance in the house.  They’re getting weaker and she’s growing stronger.  Camera Girl misses her granddaughter so she’s also getting uppity.  That means there’s no peace for me.  But I’m relieved that the little girl has gotten over the bug.  Now there shouldn’t be any nonsense about this three-year old girl getting that stupid vaccine ever.  She’s got the best kind of immunity and she won’t have any of the side effects.

I read where the drug makers wanted the results of the drug testing for the vaccines kept secret for seventy-five years.  I heard that they were not accommodated on this and the results will be available soon.  Something tells me those results weren’t normal.  I’m guessing that without legal immunity the manufacturers would never have dared to put these drugs into people.  I get the feeling that a lot of stuff is going wrong for the people running this country and it wouldn’t surprise me if they start to change their tune real soon.  If the Supreme Court rules against the vaccine mandates, I’ll bet Joe Brandon is going to soften his tune and start reconsidering a lot of things like his COVID policies, his anti-fossil fuel policies and who knows, maybe even his open border stance.  He’s made a lot of people very angry and they’re not going to forget anytime soon.  After the midterms he’ll try to sell everyone the old “bipartisan” routine.  Hopefully the Stupid Party will be slightly less stupid than usual and resist the impulse to help the evil Party out of their mess.

Enjoy the weekend.

08JAN2022 – OCF Update – Oh, the Pain, the Pain

I have a post queued up for tomorrow at 6 am but I just had to talk about the Star Trek series.  I just finished the Lights of Zetar episode and the review will come out at midnight tonight.  But I felt I needed to vent about this task I’m completing.

I had forgotten over the years just how awful the Season 3 episodes actually were.  I have only six episodes left and two of them I want to review.  Requiem for Methuselah I look forward to because I love the pomposity of the line, “I am Brahms and da Vinci.”  The other episode is the “space hippies” one which is so awful that I will luxuriate in its goofiness.  Spock playing his Vulcan harp shouldn’t be missed.  But that still leaves four putrid episodes I’ll have to watch and review.

I am a weak willed individual and my mind rebels at this thankless and painful task.  For that reason I felt it was fair to cry out with this whiny complaint.  Letting the world know of my anguish makes me feel better.  My pain is shared.

I try to psych myself up by thinking that I will be able to start my next review project.  I plan to do Jackie Gleason’s “The Honeymooners” series.  I’ve always enjoyed most of that series and it will be a pleasant contrast to Shatner and his crew of space losers.  Well, thank you for reading this howl of indignant pain.  For those of you who read the Star Trek reviews I hope the earlier episodes were more fun for you than these last ones.

Snow Removal Musings

So today I paid my first installment of winter penance in New England.  Three hours of snow removal and only half of the job is done.  Because I waited for the snow to stop before starting to clear it and since the snow didn’t end until early afternoon, I ran out of daylight at about the same time as I ran out of sensation in my frozen toes.  Tomorrow I’ll finish off the job.  But coming into a warm house and taking a hot shower after snow work is conducive to thinking.  So, thank you annoying snowstorm.

While I was clearing the snow it occurred to me that places like California have legislated to eliminate internal combustion engines from lawn mowers.  Eventually they want all motors to be electric.  If these people have their way it will require multiple large and expensive batteries to be able to clear snow for six hours or cut a large lawn.  Now granted lawns are not essential things but in a place like New England or any of the other cold weather areas of the country snow removal can be critical.  In fact, sometimes it’s life or death.  What if the idiots who want to make all motors electric have their way?  What exactly happens to the fleet of snow plows and other snow removal vehicles?  Will there be a warehouse full of batteries ready to be swapped out every few hours?  And around here it’s in the winter time that power lines go down.  What if there is no current to recharge those batteries?

I’m sure these people can’t be so stupid as to eliminate all these essential-service gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.  For instance, they’re not going to have armies of battery powered harvesters and combines harvesting all the grain in the Midwest.  But that just makes it more sinister.  They know that they won’t eliminate these uses of fossil fuels.  And in point of fact almost all of the electricity that will power all these batteries is produced by burning fossil fuels.  And that won’t change.  What they want to eliminate is our private access to fossil fuels.

As I’ve previously said, energy is wealth.  If the only energy we have access to is the low-capacity battery systems then we become essentially an underclass.  The rich will have all of the perks that include gasoline powered lawn mowers and snow blowers and cars and trucks and access to airline flight.  We’ll be the serfs with our short-range electric cars and our undependable electrical grid.  We’ll be travelling on buses and subways as we shuttle to and from our serf jobs.

The saddest part of this is they’ve brainwashed a lot of the millennials to believe this is all for the good.  These fools agree with the elimination of fossil fuels “for the good of the planet.”  For them global warming and green energy are realities that they believe in.  For some reason they don’t seem to understand that what they’re agreeing to is a retreat back to subsistence technologies.  Or even worse, the stratification of society where the elite class has access to modern technology but the have-nots, among whom they will be included, will subsist in third world squalor.  Or maybe it’s even worse.  Maybe they accept their status as an underclass.

I think this will be a time of sorting.  Those who voluntarily accept these losses to their freedoms and range of actions are the walking dead.  They will retreat to small rental spaces and play video games and work as unskilled labor as they wait for their lives to end.  They’ll leave behind no children and they will celebrate their own extinction as a victory for Gaia.  The rest of us will select for freedom and life.  And our children and grandchildren will inherit the earth.  Literally.

Real People and Pods

(Updated)

Corporate America has mutated over the course of the last thirty years into a completely different creature.  Back in the ‘90s if you worked for even a cold-blooded corporation like Raytheon and even though you knew (and they admitted) that you were nothing but a faceless cog to them that they would layoff at the drop of an earnings point still there was an honesty about what they were about and what your place in the company was.  You were there because they had measured your competency and they had work that they were willing to pay you to do.  And as long as you accomplished that work in a satisfactory manner and they continued to have that work for you to do, then you were a cog in good standing with Raytheon.

But in the last five years a very different model has existed at American corporations.  A larger and larger proportion of the company’s time and energy is invested in social justice.  And not just in the trappings and theater that corporations have up until now been involved in.  These trappings are things like sensitivity training and “celebrations” of diversity where they hand out rainbow magnets with which everyone must festoon their cubicles.  We’ve all learned to ignore all that crap because it’s annoying but relatively harmless.

What isn’t harmless is the diversity hires that don’t work.  I group this category into two cases.  The first case is the out and out hopeless employees.  A few years back we had an opening for a senior process engineer.  This requires someone with about five years of experience.  We don’t need a genius but we do need to have someone who knows the basic requirements for the process equipment that we use and also competency in the engineering knowledge that we typically need.  So, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, material science and the good manufacturing practices that the FDA expects in a biopharma plant.  My boss at the time had a found a candidate.  The candidate was a senior engineer at one of our competitors.  But more importantly she was a black woman from Africa.  He was in heaven.  She was a threefer; a woman, black and a foreigner.  He sang her praises and told me how much she would bring to the process engineering group through her pluperfect quantities of diversity.  For a minute I was afraid he would jump up on his desk and start dancing or burst into tears.  I nodded my head and inwardly hoped for the best.

Well, she was utterly unqualified.  She was completely unfamiliar with even the simplest equipment and instrument components.  One of the first thing a chemical process engineer becomes familiar with at his first job in a processing plant is relief valves.  The senior engineers love to stick the newbies with the thankless task of sizing and specifying these devices.  There are a bunch of safety cases that have to be considered that have to do with things like a fire breaking out in the area or a runaway reaction occurring.  I was prepared to have to teach her how to do the sizing calculations.  What I wasn’t expecting was that she didn’t even know what a relief valve is.  I was kind of stunned.  What I realized then was that they had hired someone who wasn’t an engineer.  She wouldn’t be able to do any of the work that her spot on the team would get assigned.  Six people would have to do the work of seven.  Luckily for us this very personable woman spent most of the remainder of her time with us either on maternity leave or sick leave.  She ended up having two and a half children before she left for her next diversity engineering position with one of our competitors.

That’s the first category, the completely useless.  The second category is not as absurd but much more damaging and demoralizing.  This is the Supergirl category.  Here they select a straight out of college young woman, preferably an attractive blonde girl, and put her in charge of a large group of qualified technical people and by dint of power point slides and corporate blather elevate her to upper management.  She has a very high-ranking male boss as her mentor who makes sure that everyone on the team understands that failure is not an option.  So, if she decides to institute a continuous improvement program that requires everyone to work eighty-hour weeks to constantly update the systems in an almost random fashion on a bimonthly basis then that is what everyone will do if they want to remain on the “team.”

And that is what will be.  For the younger people they’ll accept this nonsense because they’re trying to build a career.  But it’s extremely discouraging for the qualified people working under this wunderkind.  And not just the men.  Plenty of the senior women are outraged that they’ve been leapfrogged over by goldilocks and they immediately assume she’s sleeping with the boss.  So, morale goes straight to hell and anyone who can leave, does.  Eventually the problems this causes are laid at the feet of her boss and she gets kicked upstairs to the executive suite where the whole thing probably happens again.

And in the last year since the George Floyd fiasco things have gotten even worse.  Now straight white men have been targeted as people who can be openly harassed as bad people.  This is accelerating the exodus of qualified professionals from these woke companies.  The people who remain are a combination of either those who desperately need their jobs or those who agree with the social justice narrative.  And there are even straight white men who fit the latter case.  Canadians seem especially well suited for this environment.

But that brings me to the point of this post.  In the old days even at the most dehumanizing corporate hellholes you would still find plenty of humans, people you wouldn’t mind sharing a beer or playing a game of cards with.  In fact, everyone could agree on just how bad the company stunk.  But in today’s woke corporations they are actively selecting both by positive and negative reinforcement for pod people.  Working in a place that has a dysfunctional selection process that creates a caste system that ignores merit will create an echo chamber that normal people will find intolerable and in the long run will make the company unprofitable.

A few companies (e.g., Basecamp) have decided to reverse this trend and select merit as the basis for hiring and advancement.  Hopefully this will grow into a trend.  But until it does the corporate environment will be a bleak vista for the normal Joe.

06JAN2022 Update

Chemist

I’ve seen many of these hires as well. One of our useless hires (Previous employer) made a major mistake that could have killed people. It was a safety violation and management had no choice but to fire her. But they couldn’t just fire her! No, the Gods demanded a sacrifice! So a senior technician (White male, so who cares?) was also fired for “Not catching her mistake”. Apparently, it was his job to keep an eye on her. Who knew?

I had a wunderkind as a boss shortly after grad school so I stayed to build my career. This woman could do no wrong. Like you said, when the problems became apparent, they fired her boss – and gave her his job. A year later she went on maternity leave for 3 months and came back to a VP position. Must be nice.

07JAN2022 Update

Jason

Unfortunately, I’ve seen the wunderkind crap too many times. I’ve even been passed over because I didn’t fit the apparent “demographic need” (ie, I wasn’t female and attractive). I had been at one very large company for 6 years (12 years of total experience in the workforce) and was deemed not the right fit for a manager role that they gave to a 23 year old. To be fair, she was gorgeous. I could see the draw. Beyond that though, she ticked several other boxes as well… she was personable, easy-going, and seemed to be a real “go-getter,” etc.

She just wasn’t real bright. And the M&A role she was promoted into needed a bright person. She actually skipped one “level” and was essentially promoted twice into this role. They did offer me a transfer into the group, but it would have been a lateral move and I would have been working for this girl. I passed on the move, much to my manager’s relief.

She is now employed with the same company and has been promoted a couple times beyond that manager role to a “director,” whatever that means.

The company was trying the “woke” thing, even back in 2011 when this particular story took place. They had a women’s development group, etc. We even had meetings where they told us that they were not trying to “promote” women just because they were women even though that’s exactly what they were doing. They apparently forgot that actions speak loudly, and we weren’t blind just because we were men.

January Sixth, A Day that Will Live in Insignificance

I counted about twelve articles about “the insurrection” at Real Clear Politics.  As is their policy, half were by Leftist loons and half by our side (at least nominally).  As expected, the lefties are in full hyperventilation mode.

Phrases included:

  • Domestic terror attack
  • On par with 9/11 and Pearl Harbor Attack
  • A threat to “our democracy”
  • Truly gnarly
  • Not cool

Those last two were by Bernie Bros who had been huffing lighter fluid earlier in the day and wandered over to where I was typing.

Be that as it may, I don’t think the American people for the most part care even a little bit that this is the anniversary of the day that bison man claimed control over the United States of America.  They seemed more interested in the fact that after two years of COVID torture we’re still looking at Biden’s stupid face covered by a ridiculous rag.  And they are especially interested in why food and gasoline prices have skyrocketed.  And some of them are interested in why the cities they live in are infested with bands of roving marauders who apparently have full immunity from arrest by the now toothless police force.

I think it’s interesting that the mainstream media has rendered itself completely untrustworthy.  At this point they could be giving away free cash and no one would bother to read what they have to say.  In addition, idiots like Adam Schiff and AOC have drifted so far from reality that only the MSNBC crowd bother listening to them rant.  And even these rabid partisans seemed strangely apathetic.

We may have reached a point where all anyone can think of is, “How many days left until Brandon leaves the White House?”  Sure, the Dems in the House will go through this charade.  They may even decide to impeach Donald Trump again.  After all it’s been almost a year since they impeached him last time and that is a long time.

But for me there’s nothing very important in the news at the moment.  Tomorrow I think the Supreme Court is supposed to take up the issue of whether the vaccine mandates on large businesses are constitutional.  Now that is important.  Could it be possible that the Supreme Court will break free of oligarchic control and do their job honestly?  It seems unlikely but it’s at least remotely possible.  I hardly want to dare hope for such a thing.  But I confess I’m excited about the prospect.  If the corporate mandate gets overturned then what about the other mandates?  Why should anyone be forced to be vaccinated against his will?  How can any of that be constitutional?    A return of sanity in this instance and at this particular moment might be a sort of tipping point in the long night of madness that is COVID.  It might just be enough to make Dementia Joe throw in the towel and go back to hiding in the White House basement.  That would be a wonderful late Christmas present for the whole country.

So then, maybe January Sixth isn’t the important date.  Maybe it’ll be January Seventh.

Manhattan DA Says No Jail Time for Crimes Below Murder or Deadly Assault

This is wonderful.  “Newly minted Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg issued marching orders to his hundreds of assistants and support staff.  Bragg says his office “will not seek a carceral sentence” for anything short of murder or deadly assault (“carceral” being progressive double-speak for prison). Also, he says minor crime won’t be prosecuted at all.”

Bragg is another of George Soros’s success stories after he donated a million dollars for Bragg’s campaign.

So now I can start my new career as jewel thief.  All I need to do is head down to the Diamond Row in Manhattan, hit all of the larger shops for a few million dollars worth of diamonds, find a fence to take them off my hands, rinse and repeat for a few weeks, then retire (far away from dangerous New York) and live the life of George Soros.  Or if I prefer burglary I can just break into apartments on the Upper East or West Sides of Manhattan, the places where people vote for progressives, and simply take all their stuff while they’re not at home.  Or I can steal luxury cars and sell them to chop shops.  That should be very lucrative.  I wonder if I can find DA Bragg’s BMW the first week just to show my gratitude?

This is very good news.  Mayor Eric Adams is going to find it pretty difficult to rein in crime if all the criminals he allows the police to arrest are simply released by Bragg.  But this should accelerate New York’s slide into cannibalism very nicely.

Thank you DA Bragg.

04JAN2022 – OCF Update – Life Resumes

So the guy showed up yesterday and after several hours of fiddling around he got the heater going again.  It still sounded terrible but it slowly heated the house up so that when it failed again today at 11 am my teeth weren’t chattering.  I pushed the reset button then calmly called up the “Company.”  And, wonder of wonders, they finally agree with me.  The fan they installed a month ago needs to be replaced.

So we’ve gathered our wits and gotten an electric space heater to keep us alive while they replace the fan this afternoon and life has resumed!

Although it’s pretty cold today, the sun is out and I hope to get Camera Girl to unleash the hounds and allow me to try and get tracking autofocus shots of them running with the A7 IV.

And I intend to continue to press on to the end of Star Trek Season 3 no matter the damage to my body, mind and soul.

Fiction writing will have to wait until I can get a block of time that isn’t submerged in contractor management grief.

The news is sort of slow.  I read that the Senate is putting aside work on BBB and will attempt to enshrine voter fraud into law.  If they fail they intend to try and eliminate the filibuster.  We’ll see if Manchin and Sistema are still holding them off.

So things are getting back to normal and I hope to have something a little less nonsensical to read soon.

So Now Physicists Are Saying the Big Bang is Just a Local Burp

Just reading this stuff makes me wonder if the scientific enterprise should be put on hold for a few millennia until we’ve usefully used the knowledge we accumulated before the twenty first century.  I mean nuclear and solid state physics have enough wonders to keep technology busy for fifty thousand years.  Maybe we should put our “geniuses” to work doing practical stuff for a good long time before we let them wallow in arrays of big bangs stretching into infinities of infinities in every dimension.

But if you like reading this stuff then have at it.  Einstein backed up his relativity theory with easily tested predictions.  When these bozos can point to a glob of dark energy then I’ll get interested.

A Doctor in Hawaii Says Enough With the COVID Theater

Here’s a doctor admitting the truth about COVID.  I assume he’ll be burned at the stake in his home in Hawaii.

  • Enough Signaling That We Can Stop the Spread of SARS-CoV-2
  • Enough of the Weekly Testing
  • Enough of the Mask Mandates
  • Enough of Vaccine Passports
  • Enough of Vaccine Mandates

He describes himself as “Buzz Hollander, MD is a family physician on the Big Island of Hawaii with no ideological axes to grind.”

Well the name buzz doesn’t inspire confidence in me but if you read his article it is extremely thoughtful.  If only someone in the Biden administration could read it might help matters.
