Are the Bidens For Real?

This whole Hunter Biden hard drive thing is surreal.    In the video link below there is an interview that Steve Crowder did with Rudy Giuliani (minutes 2 to 19 of the clip).  Now Crowder is a comedian on our side of the political divide and being a comedian he’s a little goofy but the interview clarifies some of the history of this computer hard drive.  Giuliani says that Hunter Biden brought it into the repair shop and signed for it.  When the computer was never paid for and was left for a period that exceeded the allotted time allowed it became the property of the repair shop.  The repair shop owner looked at the contents and realized what he had on his hands and contacted people on the Trump side.  Apparently he was a Republican type.  Now that was a piece of luck.  He made a copy of the hard drive and gave the original to the FBI.

Giuliani also says that when this story broke Hunter Biden’s attorney called up the repair shop and asked for the computer back.  The New York Post is a sensationalist publication.  But it is owned by Rupert Murdoch who has a lot to lose if this were a slanderous hoax.  Giuliani states that the validity of the information must have satisfied Murdoch for this story to go forward.

How does someone like Hunter Biden stay alive in the political environment that exists today?  Who collects videos of himself smoking crack and and having sex with prostitutes and puts it on a computer hard drive and leaves it with a computer expert?  How can all this be?  It seems almost too good to be true for the President and his campaign.  And on the same computer are these damning e-mails from Chinese and Ukrainian officials that document the influence peddling that Joe Biden has denied being involved in.

There’s only one reasonable explanation, Hunter Biden is part of a secret right-wing cabal dedicated to guaranteeing President Trump’s re-election.  Either that or he is a total degenerate who cannot avoid the destruction of himself and everyone around him.  Wait a minute.  …..  On second thought I’ll go with that second one.

CrissCross – A Portly Politico/OCF Cultural Exchange

To put the lie to all this talk of inter-generational warfare my friend at The Portly Politico, Tyler and I have decided to reach across the generational abyss and sponsor an exchange of posts.  He has posted an essay here at OCF and I have posted one of my reviews at his site (see link below).

Guest Contributor – photog – “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms” – A Science Fiction Movie Review

Seriously we thought it would be fun for his readers and mine to get some slightly different material for a change.  I think injecting some other points of view on the site is a big plus.

Guest Contributor – The Portly Politico – The Concerns of a 35-Year Old Man in 2020

[Update] – I saw what a nice intro Tyler gave to my post over at his site so I decided I should try to follow suit.  As part of a cross-posting agreement, Tyler from over at the Portly Politico has kindly agreed to talk about what it’s like for the millennial generation to try to follow in the footsteps of their parents’ lifestyle.  I think it will be valuable for Boomers, Xers and Millennials alike.  Highly recommended.

By Tyler James Cook, The Portly Politico (https://www.theportlypolitico.com)

When photog proposed swapping blog posts in the comment section of The Fat Man’s “Cityscape at Night,” I was intrigued, and quite enthusiastic.  That was before I succumbed to a gnarly head cold and worked a thirteen-hour day.  But that sickly plight leads nicely into photog’s suggested topic:  what are the major concerns of a young American today?

At thirty-five, I don’t know how “young,” I am, but it’s one of those ages where older people tut-tut when you suggest you’re aging.  I suppose their advanced years have taught them otherwise, and that they’d much rather be a slightly creaky thirty-five than a croaky eighty-five.

Surprisingly, I am considered part of that great, reviled generation, the Millennials.  I certainly don’t feel like one, what with my love of tradition, Christianity, and President Trump.  I was born in a time when Internet usage was limited to college campuses and obscure Bulletin Board Systems, when we weren’t handed a Star Trek communicator with access to all the world’s knowledge—and it’s basest, filthiest indulgences—when we were five.

But we had Nintendo and cable TV, and all manner of luxuries and gadgets our parents could only dream of (although my parents apparently played Pong while dating).  Suburbia was kind to my generation—too kind, as we grew up spoiled and allergic to hard work.

That said, not all Millennial whining is unjustified.  Our parents—the latter Boomers and the early Gen-Xers—could support a family of four or five on blue-collar salaries.  They also didn’t pay a fortune for college, and their college education taught them something useful, rather than Derridaean deconstruction of everything good and decent.  That degree was also their ticket to the middle class.

We grew up being assured that if we followed the same path, we’d end up with similar outcomes; indeed, we’d be better off than our parents.  For many Millennials, that was true:  both of my brothers, for example, make very good livings in academia and the law.  Access to the credentialed classes was greater than it had ever been in American history for my generation.

But one of the problems is that we could no long sustain a family on a working man’s family.  Indeed, the girls we grew up claimed they didn’t want that.  They wanted careers and academic accomplishments; the highest accolades of their chosen fields.  Never mind that most of them finished out college with a useless B.A. in Psychology (the go-to degree for girls who don’t know what they want to study) and loads of debt; that just began their long 20s, that period in which they could explore and “find themselves.”  Or they got married straight out of college after all.

The problem is that with excessive credentialing, degrees have become increasingly worthless.  For example, I hold a B.A. and M.A. in History.  That M.A. paid off in that it gained me a small initial boost in my teaching salary, and it made it possible for me to adjunct at a local technical college (never mind that I’m teaching the same material—often at a slower pace—to the college classes than to the high school students; the State wants to see that M.A.).  Otherwise, it’s been largely an ornament, something my school can tout in its statistics about faculty qualifications.

I’ve managed to carve out a decent living for myself in rural South Carolina, but it’s required constant hustling and budgeting.  To sustain myself (and sock away money for retirement), I work full-time at the high school; adjunct one or two classes online each semester; teach multiple private music lessons after school; organize and book my own shows to bring in revenue (mainly through merch sales); teach summer classes and camps; and, until this summer, work maintenance at school.  For all of that effort, I scrape together around $50,000 to $55,000 a year (although I came close to $60,000 one year).

Self-employment taxes eat away at a good chunk of my private lessons business, which The Virus temporarily shattered (along with live gigs).  I do fine for myself—I managed to buy a used car with earnings from music lessons in 2019—but if I had a stay-at-home wife and kids, there would be no way we could make it work.

For one, my health insurance would outrageous if I didn’t game the Affordable Care Act.  In order to avoid paying $400 a month in premiums for a plan with a $6750 deductible (you read that right), I max out 403(b), traditional IRA, and HSA contributions, which gets deducted, for the purpose of ACA subsidies, from my gross income.  That modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI, is low enough that the ACA considers me sufficiently destitute to pay out subsidies, so my $400 a month premium drops to around $1 a month.

Again, for a single man at thirty-five, it’s not a bad deal.  I’m in relatively good health (and am dropping some extra fat) and have managed to squirrel away enough in my emergency fund to reach my deductible without touching my HSA contributions (I’m treating my HSA as an investment vehicle, with my contributions invested in various mutual funds).  But if I were married with kids, it would be a whole different story.

I’m also blessed to have made it through college and graduate school debt free, and to have never had a car payment.  That is a luxury—really, the result of extremely generous gifts from my parents and grandparents—that has enabled me to pursue a life of financial asceticism.  If I had student loans and car payments, like many of my peers, it would be far more difficult to save and invest.

As it is, I feel like I work constantly just to provide a good life for Future Portly.  The cost in the here and now, though, is palpable.  Not only have I sacrificed energy, I’ve sacrificed some of the enjoyment of life.  Those are necessary sacrifices to avoid becoming a ward of the State in my dotage, but the price seems very high—and one that it seems I must now bear alone.

To be clear, I don’t mean to complain.  I am blessed to live a good life, and to own a house, free-and-clear.  I enjoy a degree of financial autonomy that strikes awe in my peers.

But I don’t know if it’s sustainable with a family—what I want more than anything.  The debased nature of modern dating—the topic for another guest post, perhaps?—puts a man with a traditional worldview and sound financial sense in a precarious situation.  Having built my legacy, I don’t want to squander it on some Tinder harridan with a butterfly tattoo and blue hair.  But the inflated nature of the modern dating marketplace makes even the greasiest of girls believe their beauty queens with only redeeming qualities.

A Choice for the Blue State Voters

This election is already decided in the minds of almost every voter in America.  Other than a bloodbath in Portland or some other city where the lunatics of Antifa and BLM are rampaging I don’t think there are any more minds to change in terms of the Presidential vote.  But what about going forward in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oregon, Illinois and New York?  I’d like to say a few things to the poor prisoners living in these states.  Are you happy with the way you’re being treated by the people running your state?  Do you want to send them a message or are you too passive and gutless to hit back at the people who have treated you like cattle for the last nine months?

In these blue-states, governors were complicit with local authorities in allowing rioters to control cities for months on end.  This was simultaneous with these same governors holding the general population under house arrest because of the COVID scam.  What I want to say to you blue state voters is, don’t you want to send a message to these people who have stolen most of a year out of your lives and defaced the streets and businesses of the cities you live and work in?

I’m not expecting you to necessarily vote in Republicans.  It would be reasonable for some moderate Democrat to take advantage of the unpopularity generated by the incumbents to run a primary challenge against these knuckleheads.  But if no challenger appears on the Democrat side it seems to me if you people are self-respecting men you must have pride enough to strike back at the people that allowed these outrages to go on.  Even if you don’t mind having your city held hostage by roving gangs of vandals and looters maybe you’ve grown tired of being lectured and hectored about your supposed white privilege and your responsibility and guilt for things that happened over a hundred and fifty years ago by people that probably have no relation to you whatsoever.

And if you actually have no detectable pride maybe you have some shred of compassion for your own children and grandchildren who will inherit the world that you are allowing your new masters to build.  They will be third class citizens in their own country and they will keep paying the price that you are signing them up for.  Pretty soon the red-states will be separating themselves from these policies and you will be beyond the help of free people.  Neither side will be in a position to coerce the other into following laws they don’t want.  So pretty soon you’ll have to choose.  You can turn your state around and rejoin the world of free speech and equality of opportunity or you can be a prisoner shackled to the wheel of social justice from which there is no reprieve from the life sentence.  You’ll pay your tribute to the gods of diversity and anti-racism knowing full well that no matter how much you pay it will never be enough to remove the Mark of Cain on your forehead and your descendants’ unto the last generation.  If you leave those states too late, you’ll be lucky if they leave you the clothes on your back.  All your stuff will be theirs.  Look at what California is already dreaming up for people who leave, an exit tax.

So, make up your mind, it’s your choice, at least for a little while.

The Pitch

Whether the Republican Party, going forward, continues as the home for the people resisting the Woke Jacobins or some other organization represents them, I think it is necessary that they come up with a simple narrative for why people should vote for them.  Rather than the old “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” I think they’re going to have to rebrand.  In sales there is the concept of “the pitch.”  Basically, it is the salesman’s best guess at what he can say to the buyer to close the sale.  One thing any salesman knows is that the attention span of the customer is extremely short.  What is put forth must be the strongest bit of persuasion possible and it needs to be concise.

For this reason, I believe that it is useless to try and win over the Middle and even parts of the Left by waxing poetic about free speech, free enterprise, free trade or even free college.  Some of it will work with some of them and some will work with others but even if they believe you it won’t get their attention.  All of it has already been said by all the frauds on the Left and the Right a million times already.  It’s just background noise at this point.  This won’t get it done.  And it can’t even be President Trump’s 2016 pitch, “Make America Great Again.”  It’s a great pitch and it made him president.  But it’s limited to the Right.  What we need is something that will work on anyone who isn’t woke.  We need this because the Left has unleashed a monster on the country and it shouldn’t be ignored.  It is both a horrible weapon and also a great gift.  They have dropped the mask and they are allowing the regular people on the Right and the Middle and the Left to really see what they intend for all of us.  This is the equivalent of when the Communists took to the streets in Weimar Germany.  It was their endgame and they no longer held back about what they intended and what they were willing to do to get it.

By now there is more than enough documentary evidence available from Minneapolis, Kenosha, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis and New York.  Packaging it into commercials and posters is child’s play for the campaign teams that the political parties have at their disposal.  All it requires is the slogan needed to sell the voters and convince them that it is in their interest to buy the product, to vote for the program.

Succinctly put, I think it would be something like this, “We are the only ones who can save you and your children from being eaten alive by BLM and Antifa.”  Some might object to “eaten alive.”  Maybe that seems inaccurate.  Sure, I’m a bit on the poetic side.  Say rather, “We are the only ones who can save you and your children from being beaten, robbed and dispossessed by BLM and Antifa.”  Either way I think that is the gist of the pitch.  Forget about freedom, forget about economics.  Stick to the fear of being fed to the howling mob.  I’ve never been in advertising but I was a salesman and I know that the two most powerful emotions that can be invoked in a pitch are greed and fear.  In this pitch, greed doesn’t come into play.  But fear is front and center on this one.  There are videos of the mob smashing, looting and burning down people’s businesses.  We have scenes of them beating and even killing innocent people who didn’t flee from their onslaught.

Basically, if the Republicans truly are too stupid to take advantage of this opportunity then they must simply be replaced by those who aren’t.  The Mid-West is full of Democrat voters who can be convinced that it is in their best interests to stop the madness that is being inflicted upon their neighbors every night on their television screens.

For the people listening the message should be forget the tri-corner hats, stock up on ammunition.

In Honor of Columbus Day

I love Columbus Day.  When I was a young guy working to feed a growing family, it was a little oasis of freedom in the long desert of work that stretched from Labor Day to Thanksgiving.  Sure, there’s Veteran’s Day but by then the cold weather has stripped the trees bare of leaves and the cold precludes barbecues and outdoor activities.  But on October 12th you could put some burgers on the grill and back when such things were done you might have a little parade in town and the school would run a competition to see which parents could pretend their children built the best float looking like the Nina and the Pinta and the Santa Maria.  And every little kid could recite, “In Fourteen Hundred Ninety-Two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”

But that was before we found out that Columbus was a horrible monster.  His founding of the New World was the cause of the destruction of the indigenous civilizations that lived in North and South America.

And that is the case.  His discovery uniting both halves of our world sparked the greatest expansion of human population, scientific discovery and prosperity since the discovery of fire.  Compare the state of knowledge in any art or science in 1500 and 1700 and you will find a leap forward that can only be explained by the dynamism created by the Age of Discovery.  Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Leibniz, Newton, Huygens and endless other scientists and inventors appear almost magically once the potential for expanding into a boundless new world fired the imagination and provided the material wealth to pay for all those dreams.  And all these advances in mathematics, physics, chemistry, medicine, and the technology that it spawned have changed our world immeasurably.

The children and crackpots who disparage Columbus say he was a genocidal murderer.  They claim that if he had not discovered the New World that the indigenous people would be living in peace and prosperity.  From what I’ve read of the Aztecs peace and prosperity was not their strong suit.  A civilization whose hallmark is conquering neighboring peoples and then dragging the conquered warriors to the top of a pyramid and cutting their still beating hearts out of their chests doesn’t sound like something we should be grieved about putting out of business.  In the same vein what is recorded about the warfare practiced by the North American tribes against each other isn’t exactly what the tree huggers claim was going on.  I think it would be more than fair to say that Old World and New World were fairly evenly matched when it came to cruelty.  Where they differed was in technology.  Swords, spears and arrows really don’t compare to cannons and guns.  Steel beats wood, stone and even bronze.  Cavalry can rout poorly trained infantry pretty handily especially if they’ve never seen a horse before.

The history of mankind is the story of conquest of one people by another.  But what differs is what the conquerors do once they rule.  Genghis Khan and his Mongols conquered the greater part of Eurasia.  But they have left nothing in their wake to justify the slaughter of untold millions of human beings.  The world created by the Europeans following in the wake of Columbus has changed humanity from a short-lived, pain-gripped creature always hungry for his next meal to almost pampered aristocrats trying to keep from being bored by the technological wonders that are strewn around our homes like detritus.  Pictures of the “poor” in a third world country reveals the odd sight that they are all a little on the fat side lately.

And whoever heard of a conqueror giving back his conquests to those he’s conquered.  But that is exactly what the Europeans have allowed in almost the whole of their possessions that they didn’t colonize.  Most of Asia and Africa were handed back to the indigenous peoples during the Twentieth Century.  Whoever heard of that?

So, there is my defense of Columbus Day.  The Europeans proved that they were just as ferocious as every other human population on the planet.  They just had better science and better technology.  The Europeans invented this whole “United Nations, kumbaya, We Are the World” thing and maybe it’ll catch on to a greater extent.  So far it only seems to be us turning the other cheek.  But one day humans will get around to conquering each other on a grand scale again.  There will be other empires and other genocides.  It’s human nature.  But I’d just like to say that Europeans invented the wherewithal to destroy human life on a global scale and so far, they’ve mostly used it only on each other, not the helpless savages that they found around the world.  Hardly a reason to be ashamed.

Happy Columbus Day.

How to Balance the Budget Without the Congress

Congress has essentially gotten out of the budget balancing business.  The last balanced budget was under George W Bush back in the time before Obama (BO).  But the President has something called the Executive Order and darned if it isn’t every bit as good as law.  So, until such time as Congress actually performs some function again, how about this?

In 2018 the federal government employed 2,055,731 Federal Civilian Employees.  So, putting the armed forces aside we have over two million people drawing a check entirely on our dime.  Whatever the average salary is, once you add in health insurance cost and any pension or other benefits a very conservative annual cost per employee is bound to be above $100,000.  So, just in safe ballpark numbers we are paying two trillion dollars to our public masters every year.

Now you could logically make the point that if these mostly useless people didn’t work for the government they would end up as criminals and the destitute, but putting that cost calculation aside it could be reasonably stated that drastically reducing the number of federal employees is the most effective way to reduce the cost of government.  And as an added benefit it would clear out much of the riff-raff that currently vote Democrat in Virginia and Maryland.  This giant army of freeloaders would disperse across the country and change from a dagger in the heart of the republic into a low-grade fever across the whole body politic.

Think of how wonderful it would be to see building after federal building emptied of these parasites and those same buildings sold off or demolished to make room for more worthwhile endeavors like pawn shops or nail salons.  One day the IRS could be composed of one IT technician and space on a mainframe that multiplied everyone’s paycheck by six percent and sent out the link to where payment could be sent.  NASA would just be two IP address links between the President’s office and Elon Musk’s.  And the Post Office would be a website page that lists the names of companies like FedEx and UPS that have trucks.  Anyone who wants to send a letter would be reminded of the e-mail addresses that everyone in the world already has.  And even for bureaus, departments and offices of the federal government that serve some actual purpose the 80/20 rule could be put into strict application and four fifths of the denizens of the swamp could be heaved up on shore and allowed to dry out and rot in the sun.

I don’t want to claim that there won’t be consequences to something as radical as this.  For several years after the surgery these severed appendices will stagger around the landscape like extras from some zombie movie.  Their palsied limbs endlessly performing the tics of their former occupations.  Fingers hitting the reject button on applications for social security benefits and neck muscles shaking heads back and forth to signify another denial of application to delist a vernal puddle in a backyard as navigable water.  But as lack of food slowly drains them of life they will expire on the sidewalk in front of various federal buildings across the country and when they decompose, they will finally begin to serve a useful purpose.  In fact, I propose the repurposing of these former civil masters as fertilizer be given an appropriate name.  How about the “Green New Deal.”

A Graph That Actually Means Something

The polls will always show President Trump (or any Republican) losing in any election.  FUD is just part of their plan.  But apparently their FUD this year is weaker than their FUD in 2016.  Objectively that can’t be good for Joe Biden.  If President Trump is running a half a point ahead of what he did in 2016 he’s probably feeling pretty good about his chances.  Well, Biden needs a rest anyway.

Do We Need a New Foundation?

Almost since I was able to read, I have been a consumer of science fiction stories.  Back in the 1960s Asimov’s Foundation trilogy was considered part of the canon of great science fiction.  For the non-science-fiction-nerd, the Foundation stories are based on a conceit that a galaxy wide empire of human planets was formed and then, just as with the Roman Empire, it ends up in decay.  A mathematical genius named Harry Seldon perfects the science of “psychohistory” and calculates that the fall of the galactic empire is imminent and unstoppable and that the dark age to follow it will last 30,000 years before civilization reestablishes itself again across the Milky Way galaxy.  Seldon also calculates that if he could manage to set up an isolated “foundation” of scientists it can act as a seed to hasten the new civilization so that the galaxy can be restored to order in just a millennium.  Okay, end of science fiction history lesson.

Remarkably, the real world is now starting to resemble the fictional galactic empire and it got me thinking.  Do we need a foundation in this country that can survive the wreck of our republic and maybe form the nucleus for a rebirth of normalcy in this part of the world?  Asimov wrote the story so that the Foundation was located in the most obscure backwater of the galaxy so that it would be missed by the still powerful empire until it was too exhausted to be dangerous to the new civilization growing there.  Whether the analogy extends that far is a question.  In fact, I don’t even see a reason why it should be just one seed.  It seems smarter to have multiple centers and let them coalesce over time once the threat from the present federal government is reduced or eliminated.  But I could see how a large and powerful state like Texas would be a target for the feds while a small state like Arkansas might be missed when the feds go looking for trouble.  And another difference between literature and real life might be that rather than a complete destruction of the old state possibly we’ll see the old union start to reform with both sides of the political divide forming coalitions with the states that have the same politics.  Maybe the red states start pulling the same sort of stuff that the blue states do.  They can restrict their trade to just the states that align with their political view.  They can pass state laws to make it more difficult for the blue states and federal government to interfere in the aspects of life that they tend to cause problems in.  And they can coordinate their efforts to punish the blue states when they make a nuisance of themselves.

These things are already happening on the ground in the blue states with initiatives like sanctuary cities and so the question is whether some kind of coordination between these centers in the red states would be the equivalent of a new foundation.  Maybe the term foundation doesn’t seem precisely right but what we are talking about is the strength of a state being needed to protect its people from the feds and the woke establishment.  A state is big enough to resist coercion from the federal government.  The blue states have done a great deal along these lines and for the most part not a lot has been done to stop or even hinder them.  I know that the Left will resist this with every force they can bring to bear but just having the authorities in the reddest states begin the work of separating their interests from the blue states would be a sea change in how we all look at our place in the country.  And it would legitimize the point of view that the states are going to begin taking back their rights from the federal government.  In fact, that might be the only thing that can save this country.  What I mean is that even though both sides hate each other if we loosen up the controls so that the individual states can control their own affairs, they may be able to stand belonging to the same loose confederation as their enemies.

Now the only question is where should the new capitol be?  Never mind.  No capitol.  Just let the senators zoom from home when they need to talk.  And no salary either.  And two terms maximum.  Let’s be smart this time.

Texas Will Prosecute Netflix Over Movie that Sexualizes Children

Netflix has been indicted on a criminal charge that alleges the streaming giant promotes “lewd visual material” of a child.

“The lawsuit centers on the release of the French film “Cuties” that has been mired by controversy since its release last month.

A Tyler County, Texas grand jury moved to return an indictment against Netflix on Sept. 23, Fox News confirmed on Tuesday via court documents.

The complaint alleges Netflix “knowingly” promoted visual material which “depicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age at the time the visual material was created, which appeals to the prurient interest in sex, and has no serious, literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.””

Perfect.  I hope Netflix is sued out of existence.  It would be poetic and actual justice.  These are awful people who would be better off in prison for the rest of their lives.  If our society has sunk this low then there is not much hope that it will survive.  In fact, if we allow this sort of thing to happen then our society should be destroyed.
